Re: Private Liability Insurance (Basel)

I know that in some Kantons liability insurance is a legal requirement when renting a property.

I purchased it here for the first time in my life, as it seems the usual pattern when vacating a property is tenancy agency/landlord play a game (sometimes to an extreme degree, othertimes more reasonably) whereby they list a range of defects and invoice the departing tenant for them. This list is usually forwarded on to one's liability insurance provider who can then argue the toss as they see fit saving the tenant from a nervous breakdown.

Thankfully it is remarkably cheap given a) this is Switzerland and b) the charges some landlords dream up. I don't remember exactly what we pay put it is sub-CHF200 p.a.

Usually the landlord insists on you having private liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung)

I got mine through this company who are recommended by Novartis:
Beat von Allmen
beat.vonallmen@nvc.ch

NVC Neutrales
Versicherungs-Center AG
Nauenstrasse 41
CH-4002 Basel

+41 (0)61 227 95 95 Office www.nvc.ch

Beat speaks perfect English, the policy is from Protekta and you can look up the website and translate via google if needed.

If you have car insurance and or household insurance, it may be easier to use the same company.

Re: Private Liability Insurance (Basel)

Liability insurance is Switzerland is actually the most straightforward cover.

From us at Zurich Piunti Expat Division the base rates (correct at time of post) are:

The third party liability to cover a single person and pets is CHF 120 per year for 5 million cover against others and their property.

To cover a family (deemed as all living at your address) and pets is CHF 170.

To increase this liability cover to 10 million is an extra CHF 10

There is additionally a driving add on one can have which covers damage to a borrowed car if the owner is a private person who lives at a different address to the insured, the car is not for buisness use and it is not a regular occurrence; this is an extra CHF 40 per year.

Policies may be purchased separately or in conjunction with contents insurance and further discounts may be applicable

Best,
David
