Health Insurance Costs?

Hi Guys

Having no experience what-so-ever with health insurance in Switzerland would anyone know if 235CHF per month would be expensive for a 40 year old man to insure himself, this price includes basic and complimentary insurance.

I know that all insurance companies and their policies differ but this is a mid range one with a 1000Chf access.

All info will as always be grateful.

Re: Health Insurance Costs?

Hi,

I don't have a lot of experience with this, but when I was looking for a health insurance company I used this website: http://www.comparis.ch/. You have to specify your age and your zip code and then you can request a quote from the first health insurance companies listed there (the cheapest). It depends a lot on how old you are and where you live from what I understood. I think it also depends on your medical history, you will be asked to fill in some forms by the insurance companies. The prices you get from comparis is only an estimation.

Hope this helps.

Re: Health Insurance Costs?

I checked quotes for Minima, similar conditions of between 230chf and 270chf. There are certain conditions with some of the quote:

a) you contact our helpline before seeing a doctor
or
b) you go to a medicentre that is registered with us.

These two schemes to reduce the premium have a name, but I can remember it. comparis describes them.

For basic insurance the cover is identical with all companies.
Look at Comparis for quotes and see the FAQ on this section.

Please explain what you mean by complementary insurance.

Your 235 sounds slightly expensive to me. It really does depend on where you live, but it's in the right ballpark, depending on what the complementary bit offers.

As it happens, I just received my yearly policy renewal, offering a change of excess. I banged the numbers into a spreadsheet and found that should you need treatment which exceeds your excess, you are better off going for a lower excess. Like any insurance, it's a kind of gamble - you think you will be healthy and not need a claim, but be prepared to shell out if you do need one.

As an example from my spreadsheet, I see I can save something like CHF more than 500 a year by choosing the 1000 excess rather than the 300 one. Should I need treatment costing more than 1000, the saving of that 500 plus would be outweighed by the 700 difference in excess.

Re: Health Insurance Costs?

I pay 204 CHF a month for basic insurance, this is with Winterthur. I pay the first 2 or 2.5K which suits me as I don't plan on getting man-colds etc. I think the complementary includes certain preventative measures like chiropractice (although my basic covers this), alexander method, acupuncture and other types of voodoo.

Re: Health Insurance Costs?

All,

I have just received some quotes for insurance and they appear high. My main question is this: Do you pay for check ups? By this I mean, if a member of my family devlops a rash or somthing that we'd usually have a GP check out. Or, do we only use the insurance for treatment & prescriptions?

Right now, we're looking at CHF 1,074 per month for 2 adults + 2 children using statutory minimum excess (CHF 300 & 0.00 for kids). That seems really high!

Thanks!

JC

Everything doctor related is reimbursed by the insurance according to the contract conditions.
