Cancelling Health ... do I have to pay for whole year ?

Hi,
I can't find an answer to this on the forums, so hope it's not been asked before...
I leave Switzerland at end of month, return to UK... am about to send letter to health insurance company + letter from Gemeinde confirming I am
deregistered from 29th Feb. I thought I would therefore not have to pay
any more premiums ( I am paid up to end of Feb. ) ... I have been told by someone at work that I may have to pay for the whole year since policies
are for a full year, apparently.

This sounds odd to me, anyone know if this is correct ? In England I
have usually paid policies upfront for a year, since it is usually cheaper
that way - any cancellation would just result in a refund minus a penalty/admin charge. - but here since I never really settled I just pay it at the post-office each month.

I must admit that if they try to sting me for a year then I'll just ignore any post from them....

Thanks

I'm pretty sure there's something about this on here - probably in 'Leaving Switzerland' as that is really the most appropriate place for the question. Instead of listening to 'someone at work', who presumably hasn't left Switzerland yet, I would try to see if Jenny has written anything about it. She is our resident specialist on Insurance matters.

Re: Cancelling Health ... do I have to pay for whole year ?

Thanks,

I have found a FAQ on this forum... which gave me an answer, apparently
I don't have to pay the year.... but sifting through the other forum posts, I should send by registered mail as these companies seem to be useless, and may still need chasing up!!.. ( and I thought it was only English public-facing companies that were crap ! )...

Cheers

Hi Mark,

No you will not have to pay the whole year, just up to the end of the month you leave.

You must de=register with the commune at your Gemeinde and send this proof into the company with a termination, same as other insurance covers.

Best,
David
