Short term motorcycle insurance?

I am in Switzerland for about two months and planning to purchase a motorcycle here. However, I heard that motorcycle insurance policies are only issued for whole years. Is that correct? Is there a company where I could purchase insurance on a daily, weekly or monthly basis?

And in separate consideration, does anybody know a place that rents motorcycles weekly for reasonable prices?

Thank you

Re: Short term motorcycle insurance?

With ours we pay upfront, and then whenever we hand in the plates, we'll get a refund for whichever months we didn't use. We use AXA.

Are you only visiting on a tourist visa for these couple of months? You will not be able to get a policy on a Swiss motor without a permit and Swiss domicile address.

Also, you can arrange to pay for only a few months at a time, instead of for the
whole year.

Philippe Coulon Moto Boutique rents motorcycles here in Neuchatel. I don't know for how much but you can call 032.730.17.01 (french speaking) or check out www.2roues.ch/coulon

Re: Short term motorcycle insurance?

If you manage to buy an insurance you can stop it whenever you hand in the license plate, so short term insurance wouldn't be a problem, I speak from first hand experience as I often bought and sold motorbikes within less than a year.

But the residence permit thing could be a problem. What bike are you planning to buy and how do you intend to sell it again?

Re: Short term motorcycle insurance?

Motorcycle insurance provides short term cover purchased by the day. Yes, if you search online then you can get many motorcycle insurance provider that allows bikers to get temporary insurance cover to either enable them to use another bike that does not belong to them, to drive home a new bike or to insure another person to ride their own bike.

Such kind of policy is fully comprehensive for your daily, monthly and weekly requirements of the insurance budget. However, you can’t get policy without a permit and Swiss domicile address.

Re: Short term motorcycle insurance?

Thank you all for the responses so far.

I am already in Switzerland (Zurich area) and currently staying as a tourist. Being a Swiss citizen, I could register a domicile address if need be, but prefer to avoid the paperwork if not necessary.

I am still a beginner (started riding a 250ccm in February) and was looking for a modest sport or touring bike in the 600ccm range.
