I insured my car with Allianz, I paid for the whole year in advance...but now I am leaving CH and need to cancel it...do you know if I am entitled to claim back the CHFs for the time left (5 menths more or less)??

Yes if you are leaving and deregister they are obliged to refund you pro-rata upon cancelation, allowing for admin time of course....

What will you do with you car?
E.g. if you export it out of CH insurance will end and you should get back the remaining time payments.

September 28th is the last day to cancel your car insurance policy, effective 31.12.2012. (30.09.2012 is a Sunday)

Your resignation letter must be in the insurance company office before 4 pm on 28th September.

You don't have to cancel it, just de-register the car and it is cancelled automatically.

I do this all the time (three of my motorcycles are only insured/registered for part of the year).

Tom- how do you de-register your car?

At you Cantons Strassenverkehrsamt / Service de Automobile you have to hand in your gray card and license plate. Maybe even possible per letter or directly in a post office.

It is also possible to just deposit your license plate w/o de-registration this may save your insurance fee and road tax (I used 'may' because there is a small processing fee).

No, when you deposit the plates they cancel the registration.
