Health insurance when moving cantons

Hi,

I've recently moved from ZH to NE. My health insurance company (Atupri) doesn't operate here the HMO model I like (they only have Telfirst), and they've also increased my premium significantly.

My question is simple: am I allowed to change the insurer due to the move, or do I have to wait until November like everybody else?

Best,

natcam.

I would assume you have to stay with Atupri until 31.12.2013. Don't they have a help line you could phone?

Your premium will change depending on your kanton, no way to get around that. I seriously doubt you'll be able to change mid-stream, but best to check. I know when we moved last year our premium changed based on our kanton - we didn't want to change so i don't know if we could have.

Re: Health insurance when moving cantons

Hi,

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I wrote Atupri asking if I can resign now. I know the premiums vary from canton to canton, but I never expected to pay over 50% more for a clearly inferior model. I should have been smarter and change providers back in November, since I knew then I'd be moving.

Looks like I'm going to grumble about it for the next 10 months or so.

Hi Natcam,

After searching through the forums, I'd be really interested at how your case turned out. Did you just have to bite the bullet and pay till the end of your contract?

I am having a similar experience, where my insurer is billing me a large increase in premium (double) since switching Kanton from Basel-Land to Basel-Stadt. What's more, is that they never informed me of such an increase and also failed to send me the first 3 months of monthly invoices since moving. So after repeatedly contacting them to send me the invoices, I ended up with one huge bill covering the 3 months.

Long story short, should the Health Insurer notify the customer of an increase when moving, and does the customer have the right to refuse such a huge increase and switch provider?

Anyone's help, advice or experience would be gratefully received.

Unfortunately you are likely stuck until the usual termination date:

http://www.bag.admin.ch/themen/krank...04125/?lang=de

Januar.

(Note that the 1 Juli termination date is AFAIK restricted to those with a 300 Franchise... but check your contract.)

ETA:

Just noticed that the BAG page is also in English:

http://www.bag.admin.ch/themen/krank...x.html?lang=en

No right of extraordinary cancellation
Premium adjustments resulting from a change of residence, a change of a child’s premium to an adult’s premium or the discontinuation of a premium reduction gives you no right of extraordinary cancellation. The dates for giving notice of change are 1 July and 1 January.

Your move, your problem.

Health insurance premiums are published by the federal government - http://www.priminfo.ch/ - so there is perfect transparency.

The fact that you are not aware of the fact that health insurance premiums are tied to your place of residence by law ("premium region" - http://www.priminfo.ch/praemien/regionen/de/index.php) is unfortunate.

Case in point: If I was to move 6 km, I would be paying any one of three different health insurance premiums, some higher, some lower, depending on the direction (north, west, east) I was to move. And all of that using exactly the same health insurance.
