Cancelling or changing your health insurance

The magic date for changing your health insurance is the 31st December, and to achieve this correctly you must give notice in writing, preferably by registered letter (Einschreiben) and send it in good time.

A reminder that for the basic health insurance (KVG), one month notice must be given and your resignation letter must arrive in the insurance office on or before Friday 29th November 2013.

For the extra supplementary health insurance (VVG), three months notice in writing is required, your registered letter must arrive on or before Monday 30th September 2013.

Please post your letter a few days earlier than necessary, just to be on the safe side!

Re: Cancelling or changing your health insurance

By the way, if your insurance starts, for example, in October, can you still change your insurance company at the end of the year (by informing them before the end of November)?

Yes of course, for the mandatory KVG. For the supplementary VVG maybe not!

Well, it depends on whether they have told you already the cost of the insurance for the next year, and if it has changed.

Because, normally, the deadline for changing Basic Insurance is 3 months , except (though this except is nowadays the NORM) when the rates will increase next year and you are told <3 months before the end. The company must tell you >=2 months before they take effect. In that case you can change with 1 month notice, ie, end November.

Do the same rules apply when you are leaving the country? I guess you can cancel the insurance with no delay, I hope.

Re: Cancelling or changing your health insurance

When you resign at your Gemeinde/Commune, you receive a certificate, which you photocopy and send to everyone:

mobile phone, cable TV, electricity, apartment, health insurance, etc etc. they are all then cancelled.

Thats right. With this form you can cancel your contracts... But maybe for your phone contract you have to pay some money. Especially when you got a free iPhone with your contract...

Is there a health insurance company that has it's literature and policies in English for those of us who are new here and don't trust Google translate?

You can try Swica ... www.swica.ch ... I was thinking about moving over to them and they came recommended by a friend. All the stuff (as well as email correspondence) was done in English ...

Hi,

Does it make a difference for canceling apartment lease if you are moving outside CH by showing the resign letter by commune?

Thanks!

Strangely, in the office of CSS they said that one needs to be insured for at least one year to be able to cancel.
Although, on their web-site it's stated that it can be canceled before 30 November:

Re: Cancelling or changing your health insurance

When comparing insurance everyone thinks of www.comparis, but that is not exactly independent.
Comparis does not mention ALL the companies, just the ones that pay Comparis a commission...

The new rates for 2014 are available on the government independent website (Sorry, only in D,F,I )

http://www.priminfo.ch/praemien/index.php?sprache=d

Be careful!
The very cheap insurers do not always employ enough office workers and you might wait months for your
medical claims to be refunded.

Be careful!
Some policies cost less if you keep to the insurance company rules (Only using the company approved doctors etc)
If you break these rules by going to another doctor, the company can claim the full premiums back dated to 1st January....

What nonsense, the worst they can do is not pay, usually they pay most of the cost. They could never charge you a premium that you did not agree.

Then read Bon a Savoir, 10. October 2013 page 5. Where are the references for your nonsensical statement?

You don't even need to submit bills that are are not covered
All insurance is a con, which is why I take the cheapest with the biggest excess & just pay myself. It's way cheaper, wasted 40K in CH & £40k in the UK Had I invested the premiums over the last 30 years it would be worth 250K chf now.

Re: Cancelling or changing your health insurance

I have changed health insurers all the 3 years that I have been here, by terminating my contracts with a properly drafted and timely delivered registered letter. This year I heard from a colleague of mine that he was able to terminate his insurance contract of last year by sending a signed and scanned copy of the termination letter to his insurance provider through their web portal. My insurer for this year is different from his insurer of last year, so I can't really say whether this would be an acceptable by every insurer.

Does anybody have any experience backing up this claim? Considering that these web portals were designed to reduce paper exchange, I don't see why not, so I have sent a query to my insurer already. If this works, then I would gladly follow the same approach every year, if required.

Re: Cancelling or changing your health insurance

In continuation of my previous post, this year I successfully managed to terminate all the existing KVG contracts for my entire family and changing health insurance providers online... I used the online portals of the insurers in concern for sending the termination requests and received the confirmations via the same medium... I used signed and scanned copies... saved some paperwork for me and the hassle of sending registered letters at CHF6.- a piece!

Re: Cancelling or changing your health insurance

Well done, you saved Fr 6,--

Can you imagine the difficulty of making your resignation effective if they chose to ignore your e-mail? After 30th November you have to pay for the next 12 months.

Don't chance your luck! The Gemeinde Social Services in Bremgarten BE, claimed to have never received a registered letter! Unfortunately we lost the Post Office receipt, and the 30 day window for any objection had closed by the time we realised they were doing nothing about a child adoption ....
