Is private British Health insurance accepted in CH.

If one is a resident of CH, will private British Health Insurance be acceptable?

Re: Is private British Health insurance accepted in CH.

This thread appeared a while ago and, while it was mainly to do with BUPA health coverage, you might glean some answers from it.

Basically, you might get away with it if you are on a temporary contract and in a canton which permits you to have UK health insurance rather than the Swiss coverage. Otherwise, it seems you've got to pay for Swiss insurance.

Yes, it seems Bupa does not cut the mustard as far as the Swiss authorities go.

Further to this, I wonder if there are any international insurances that are accepted in Switzerland for a long term resident?

Is it worth the hassle, though? If you have basic coverage here, it's not a bank-breaker because the costs are protected, plus you have the reassurance that they will pick up the tab on any treatment (after you've paid your chosen excess).

External insurance companies have an uncanny knack of looking for ways to wriggle out of paying for treatment.

Can I ask why you want to avoid Swiss insurance?

pretty sure your UK insurance will stipulate you must be UK resident, so you won't actually be covered anyway.

The Swiss authorities accept any insurance (from any country), as long as it covers exactly the same stuff as the swiss one does ("LaMal" swiss law).

The bar is quite high, as we are not talking a visit to the doctor, emergencies and accidents, but also more costly long term care, cancers, maternity, operations etc. (UK travel insurances avoid these costs, as for non-emergencies they say you have to return to the UK to get treatment).

In practice:
- most uk health insurances stipulate you have to be UK resident, or at least have a definite day of return (eg going to Switzerland for a year to study).

- very very few (perhaps 0) foreign insurances cover the same stuff as LaMal; and even if they did I suspect it would cost a lot more (for the priviledge). This means that the Swiss will make you take a local health insurance plan, so a foreign alternative is pointless.

- Generally, it's always cheaper to get the insurance in the same country as the "thing" that is insured. Eg., if you have a swiss car, the cheapest is to get swiss car insurance; if you have UK home, you get UK home insurance. Anything else will skyrocket the costs, as eg, a Swiss home insurance company has no idea of the "risk" associalted with your UK home, so - assuming they accept you in the first place - they will charge you crazy premia to mitigate the risk.

Re: Is private British Health insurance accepted in CH.

I support Sandgrounder's arguments.

Most insurance companies are keen to take on young healthy people, but once you reach 50 years of age you find the costs increasing, or the treatments are limited. Then when you look for new health insurance you find they will not cover existing conditions. So you end up paying more for your treatment, or learn to live with the pain!

Swiss health insurance might be the best in the world, (But I wish they would cover dentistry!), as the treatment and premium costs are controlled by the government, and not by a regulated trade association.

My daughter arrived from the UK in June and started work in September. During this period, Bern accepted the NHS insurance card as she was not working, and she could be considered as a tourist for this short period.

When I was working in Munich, the DKV tried to sell my wife a health insurance policy, even though they knew she was pregnant, and we were moving to Switzerland. They obviously thought they could wriggle out of the costs as we would not be in Germany for the birth.

BUPA international is for non residents, however it does not cover GP's or child birth so it's not equivalent to Swiss basic cover.

International health insurance accepted in Switzerland?

Hello everybody

Well, I am a Swiss citizen and it is probably for exactly that reason that I can't answer the quesiton myself. I just hasn't been an issue for me so far. Now my husband is in the process of obtaining the familiy reunion visa and we aren't sure if he can stay covered with Bupa international health insurance once he takes up residency here.

Nope! He'll need Swiss health insurance.

Re: International health insurance accepted in Switzerland?

We would like to avoid paying double, Bupa and the Swiss insurance. When he gets the visa, from what time on does he need to be covered in Switzerland? I read something about a timeline of 3 months. But will he have to pay also for the months that have already passed?

Re: Is private British Health insurance accepted in CH.

Swiss insurance must begin the day you register to live here. Husband needs to cancel the BUPA as soon as possible. Dentistry is not covered here in the basic, so he might want to keep that part active.

Would the dentistry part still be active once he becomes a resident though?

Samira, why does he have international cover? I assume he travels a lot, but to what countries? If it's mostly Europe then the Swiss health insurance will cover him for emergencies that happen in another European country anyway. Here's more on the card from the NHS website:
