Health Insurance

Hello,

I am moving to Switzerland to study for two years. Is there anyone who has done this that can advise me about Health Insurance? I have a private health insurance policy from Ireland that technically covers me in Switzerland, but I am not sure if it includes absolutely all the of the more minor requirements (chiropractor for example)

I am hesitant to have to takes out a Swiss policy if I already have on here.

Any advice?

Many thanks

Re: Health Insurance

Even if your policy covers you here, it is rare that the Swiss will accept anything other than a Swiss Health Insurance policy. It's generally unavoidable.

Also make sure your Irish policy covers you if you are living here… not just here as a tourist.

Health insurance varies depending on which canton you live in and and what type of model you choose. I have heard of some cheaper plans for students, but I don't know anything about these, maybe someone else on here is more knowledgeable.

You can enter your details on comparis.ch for an idea of how much a standard plan will cost you (telmed model is cheapest where you have to phone up to ask to go and see a doctor).

Re: Health Insurance

SwissCare is specifically aimed at student, etc, so might be worth a look at .

Also see the thread below yours on Insurance for EU citizens. Depending on where you're studying you might be able to get your Irish insurance recognised.

Thank you everyone for the help!

Final question, does the European Health Insurance Card count?

Yes for emergencies, during the first 3 months.

You will have to register as living here, and as you are not earning money, the authorities might recognise your Irish insurance. In any case after 3 months you cannot claim to be a tourist any longer.

There was an Irish man earlier asking similar questions: search the forum?

Yes it does but doesn't cover you for accidents so you need to pay a little extra for just this part of the insurance.

No, not if you're resident here, and the Swiss authorities won't accept it.

Re: Health Insurance

Just to clarify, my fiancée (eu) is joining me for 3 months in Zurich. If something happens to her while in Switzerland, can she rely on her European health insurance card? Or even with that the expenses would be too high in Switzerland? Do we need some kind of traveler insurance?

Not if she registers as being a resident, no. She would need Swiss health insurance. Otherwise, if she's here as a tourist then her card will cover her for emergency treatment only.

Re: Health Insurance

Yes, she will be tourist for the first three months and then she will register. She has the funds to prove that she can stay here, and then she will get Swiss insurance.

Re: Health Insurance

The Ehic card will conver her for emergencies only. If for instance she has an accident (and I am pretty sure accidents are covered by EHIC- will have to re-check)- but it will not cover further treatment, or repatriation, etc. Should she need further treatment after the 'emergency' part- she would have to return home, at own cost. Not too bad if you can jump on EasyJet or similar, but with a severe injury or illness, she may need a private ambulance, etc. Just does not bear thinking about.

So really, much much better if she gets Travel insurance for the first 3 months.
