Health insurance after 3 months

I've got until the end of the month to sort out my health insurance before I reach the 3 month deadline, I'm curious as to what happens if I don't get it sorted?

We applied as a couple for insurance from Swica in the middle of December and at the end of last week we got a letter back saying it had been declined, this week we've been calling around trying to get things worked out but so far no one at the company knows anything about why it was declined, they're always waiting to talk to another one of their colleagues who knows more about the case.

What happens if I don't get anything sorted by the end of the month?

Swica cannot deny you the basic/compulsory insurance. Perhaps you applied for the supplemental as well? They can deny you for any reason at all on the supplemental.

If you don't sort your insurance and get proof to the municipality, they will pick an insurance for you. It may or may not be the cheapest option. You're stuck with it for a year.

We applied for a few little extras like money back on Gym memberships and international cover, nothing too extreme.

I might have to talk to them about getting the basic cover, we're hopefully going to find out more tomorrow.

Just get your basic cover sortedů you can then take your time to look around for the extras.

Yeah, good idea.

Last time I was in Switzerland just over a year ago I got insurance with them without any issues so it surprised me that there was anything different this time, maybe turning 30 puts me into a different box.

Did you use it a lot? If so plus being +30 could make you a bad risk. As said, they can't turn you down on basic.

I never touched it, not even a single claim/receipt.

Re: Health insurance after 3 months

A bit of an update and a few more questions:

We applied for Swica insurance in the middle of December and forgot all about it at that point.

In January we got the letter back saying they'd tried to contact us but not been able to so we would have to give them a call.

Apparently my insurance had been declined but they couldn't tell us why, but the agent we were dealing with was going away on holiday so no one else was able to even look at our case, eventually after a lot of pushing I got the answer that they were just missing some info and that our own agent could sort it for us when she got back.

When she got back she just went with the line that she can't tell us why it was declined, she even denied the info from the other agents we'd talked to.

When she got back we asked her to go ahead with a basic insurance application, again, 2 weeks later she gets back to me asking me for signatures and everything.

3.5 months in we're no closer to being insured and I guess I'll probably get put on a random one

Re: Health insurance after 3 months

Sorry to heard that. Strange behaviour indeed. I think you will either have to choose another Krankenkasse or if you want to stay with Swica try to call their main Offices in Winterthur. I had a problem once that I could not reach anyone at the local branch and needed to talk to someone urgently so called the main number in Winterthur. I just told them that I couldn't reach anyone at the local branch and it needed urgent handeling and she helped me after that. I got very good service even. So my advice is to not give up yet, try to go trough via the main number in Winterthur.
Good luck, hope you will figure everything out.

Get in touch with the municipal office and let them know you're exchanging phone calls and documents. Hopefully they will be understanding and not just sign you up somewhere. They do need to know you've got it in the works, though.

Re: Health insurance after 3 months

Can you try to have an insurance with another company? I had Concordia as my health insurance and had no problems with them. Just an idea.
