Travel health insurance for guests / pre-existing conditions

I was wondering if anyone has found any travel medical insurance that also provides some sort of coverage for acute onset of a pre-existing conditions?

My father is diabetic (under control for several decades now) and mom has some hypertension (also under control). I found several travel insurances for visitors to USA where you can specifically pay more to cover for limited coverage of acute onset of pre-existing conditions. However, I have had zero luck for Switzerland/Schengen area. I am just afraid because most things can be connected to diabetes and/or hypretension and could fall under "pre-existing" making a normal insurance product bit pointless (??).

There must be something, no? There are thousands of diabetic elderly travelling Europe each year and I imagine some proper insurance provider has an insurance product out there. I am trying to stay away from random website insurances companies, if possible. I just can't seem to find anything!

Re: Travel health insurance for guests / pre-existing conditions

Are your parents from Wisconsin USA? In which case they need insurance from there. In the UK SAGA and also Age Concern have specialist travel insurance for older people with pre-existing conditions, at a price.

Most countries have a club/charity/magazine for the over 60s- which give advice, provide insurance and travel tours, etc. Here is the one in the UK - there might be something similar in the USA:

Aha, I thought maybe it would be more convenient in case of an emergency to have a Swiss provider. Will look into it from that angle.

Thanks!

Most insurers will only insure residents of their own countries.

Re: Travel health insurance for guests / pre-existing conditions

I already looked at AXA Schengen insurance, Helsana, and several other obvious ones. Unfortunately, they all expressly state that pre-existing or any complications that might be related to the pre-existing would not be covered by the insurance.

Anyways, I found one insurance plan in USA that would work for them. It is bit tricky because they recently retired in a different country and I don't really trust insurance companies over there. Since they are not US residents anymore they are not qualified for most of American insurances. Luckily, there are still couple of them.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Travel health insurance for guests / pre-existing conditions

Be very careful that the insurance will cover them if they are no longer residents. Insurance companies are notorious for accepting clients- and then wriggling out on technicalities. Where do your parents now live- they should really take insurance out in their new country of residence.

Re: Travel health insurance for guests / pre-existing conditions

Something to be aware of:

Even with travel medical insurance, you might find that your folks (or you) are required to put down a deposit before being treated here. Or that you, the Swiss resident, might be required to sign a guarantee of payment.

In a life-or-death emergency your folks would be treated right away - but something needing timely attention but less than that level of urgency may require some kind of payment upfront.

I would assume that each hospital or doctor would have their own policies for dealing with non-residents, so you might not run into this - but be prepared. You might even call your local hospital and ask how they would handle non-resident patients, with or without recognized/accepted travel medical insurance.

Hope you find a solution.
