All this shopping around and looking for rules might be wasting your time if A) your current plan won't cover you more than 6 months and B) you can't change plans.
You are right. I can't change my insurance plan... for now!

My strategy seems now that since other insurance companies (see in my previous post) can cover me for more than 6 months abroad, then I might switch to one of them in December.

Well the insurers never ask many questions in CH, they just pay up without blinking, so I don't think there will be any issue.
Thanks for the tip! I'd rather like to avoid betting my health & crap loads of money on this though!

How can one tell if it's the case for all insurances anyway?... it's another topic of its own I suppose!

What's crazy about it?! In general, health insurance here is for Swiss residents for services provided in Switzerland. "For convenience" you are – of course – also covered for emergency outside of Switzerland during holidays and business trips. But as soon as you emigrate[...]
I am not emigrating. I am travelling... for a very long time (1+ year).

There is the obligatory LaMal/KVG and accident coverage. This will cover emergencies during a period of 6 months ourside switzerland, up to 2x cost of treatment in Switzerland (i.e. you need something extra if you are going to USA). All insurances will offer the SAME coverage here.

The insurance you posted that offers 12 months is a supplementary insurance / VVG. This is regulated differently - I think you can take it out any time, and it has different terms and conditions especially regarding contract length and termination. It does not replace KVG/LaMAL usw.

If you are getting a specific supplementary insurance anyway, get one oriented specifically to extended travelling. Will probably make any claims easier although hopefully there are none!
