Car Insurance

Hello Gurus,

I am planning to import my car from UK to Zurich which is lying in garage unused for more than 1 year ..... I obviously am not paying any insurance since it is not being used. Now I have decided to bring it here, but I am having problems with the insurance cover... I called many insurance guys in UK for a temporary insurance which would do European cover too.... but none are willing to provide me a quote, because they say that the starting point should be in UK and end point should also be UK.....In my case the end point would be Zurich and I won't be taking the vehicle back....

I could lie to them that I will come back to UK and in the meantime get a Swiss insurance ... Is that something we can do or anyone have a better solution... Please help me....

Thanks
Harish.

Re: Car Insurance

I am currently on USA plates in CH . Car was brought int through Belgium. They never asked me about end destinations though

109 Euros for 2 weeks only liability . So far no issue for anyone....got to extend it next Monday though. Customs in Basel and France accepted the insurance....

Another thing to consider is that as you didn't declare it when you first arrived you may end up being charged import duty on it. You may not - but you may do - just to be warned.

Unless it is something special you are far better off selling it and buying something here.

If you do proceed you'll need specialist cover (Adrian Flux might be a good place to start) to get you here - and then talk with Zurich, Zurich24, Allianz, Allianz24 as they tend to be the most clued up on insurance. For example my UK insurance legally ran out when I arrived in Switzerland - but had already got Zurich24 to cover me on UK plates under the proviso that I would move to CH plates as soon as I arrived.

1. Never lie to an insurance company. Especially regarding the issuance of a policy to be governed by English law. Never. Even if (as under EU motor insurance directives) they pay a third-party claim, they can sue you to recover their surrogated claim. And bear in mind a broker works for you, not the insurer. A salaried agent works for the insurer, who then may be responsible for errors of the agent. But in real life they alway blame the policyholder so read the policy documents.

2. Short-term motor insurance is commonly sold to drivers of uninsured vehicles entering the UK by ferry or air. Here's one (Aviva): http://www.aviva.co.uk/short-term-car-insurance/ and note their offer of European cover.

Re: Car Insurance

As Ken says, it really isn't worth your time and money importing a RHD car here. You will never be able to sell it, and it will be difficult to drive into and out of car parks etc. (The parking ticket will arrive at the passenger window side)

Re: Car Insurance

Thanks all for your advices.... Finally I got a decent offer in UK itself and sold my car last week... so hassles avoided...Time to search for a local car now

Regarding the aviva, I did try them and in fact many others... the problem is they are happy to offer European cover (third-party) but they would want the vehicle to be brought back to UK. In my case, I just wanted one-way from UK to Zurich, until I purchase a local cover....for which none of the insurance people are happy to cover. I don't understand the logic though ....

Thanks
Harish.
