Car Accident:Garage repairing the car without my consent

Hello fellow EFers

I had an accident about 10 days ago, It was the other guys fault and he admitted it. The same day i called his insurance and their partner garage called immediately. I went to him the same day, had some discussion he said the car can be repaired, he gave us the replacement car, at this point i didn't ask him to repair the car.
I expected that their expert will evaluate the car and will come back with the options. I didn't hear anything from the insurance or the garage for a week, so went to the garage and asked him about the status. He told me that he is repairing the car, i was surprised because i was waiting for the evaluation and didn't have the intention of getting the car repaired.
Now the insurance is saying it's between me and the garage although it's their partner and i went to him with their consent. My point is that even if my car is repaired it still has lost it's value because of the accident. What should i do to claim damages from the insurance and why the standard procedure was not followed in this case, where i should have been informed before the repair was initiated.
Thanks for reading and helpful comments.

Re: Car Accident:Garage repairing the car without my consent

why will it have lost its value? Is it being now considered accident-repaired?

cosmetics are simply that, I know a certain car which has not had the boot or bonnet repaired but it is not classed as accident-damaged. It has to buckle the chassis or something major to be like that.

what was the damage? can't have been much if you did not want it to be repaired - you cannot decide to write the car off and clearly it's not a write-off. The insurance is handling it, you left the car and took a rental - what did you expect, it to be parked there?

for certain types of damage, the partner will assess and make the recommendation to the insurance.

I don't see what the issue is with this half of the story.

Re: Car Accident:Garage repairing the car without my consent

Whenever I take my car to the garage they have a look and call me back (better, they ask me to call them back) and tell me how much it will cost. I dont know if the procedure is different in case of an accident but I could see why they were expecting to hear an offer first. What if something non-obvious is damaged and the cost goes over the roof? Perhaps it is better for everyone (insurance company included) if the car is not repaired. Shouldnt this decision be transparent to the owner?

The damage was that the right front doors was badly damaged and the right rear door was slight damaged. The chassis below the front door was damaged as well.
I was expecting that after the evaluation i will be informed about the cost of repair and whether i would like to get the car repaired or just receive the current market value of the car if the repair is deemed too expensive.
The car market value is about 12K CHF and the repair is costing 8K CHF.

Re: Car Accident:Garage repairing the car without my consent

insurance have partner garages where they pass certain tests and criteria and then the insurance usually may not send their "expert" in simple cases.

bodywork repairs are exactly that. The repair has a price, the value of the car is not impacted, the garage says it costs this and the insurance says yes or no

Re: Car Accident:Garage repairing the car without my consent

I think this is what exactly happened in my case , though i was expecting that i will be informed about the evaluation of the expert by the insurance before the repair work is initiated. The garage claims that they did send the evaluation to the insurance but the insurance didn't give any feedback to me.

Re: Car Accident:Garage repairing the car without my consent

Did you told them NOT to do the work before you give him the consent ? You also accepted the courtesy car and drove it for a week

That's not your decision to make, but the InsCos. The opposite can happen, in that they'll sometimes give you the option, but if they say it was repairable and are paying for it, what's your problem with that?

And if you think it's lost any value then you need to take it back to the garage and get the repair re-done, as the only reason would be that it wasn't done properly. In other words, if it's not noticeable, it won't affect the value.
