Help With Renters/Liability Insurance

Hi,
I'm new to Switzerland and have just found an apartment. Our new landlord is requiring us to get personal liability coverage. How much coverage should we get. I have offers from one guy who suggested 5M and another who suggested 10M.

Many thanks.
Joni

Re: Help With Renters/Liability Insurance

5M? i think we only have 1M. But, if there isn't that much difference between 5 & 10, I'd go with the higher amount. If there is a big difference, I'd go with the lower amount...
Not a very scientific answer though!

Re: Help With Renters/Liability Insurance

Thanks miniMia! I'll take whatever advice I can get.

I'm asking because I can't get any advice from our relocation company. They put us in touch with this guy who is unable to give us our insurance offer in English, told me I need to sign a 5 year contract and after a bit of my own translating, it seems the coverage he is offering is less in terms of amounts and costs more than a quote I got myself through Zurich Direct. It just makes me uneasy.

Sorry to babble. Thanks again for the advice.

Joni

If it makes you uneasy don't sign anything! & since there are plenty of companies: Keep looking! You'll find the right company. I can't give you are recommendation because my agent is in Geneva, bu I'm with Winterthur.

Re: Help With Renters/Liability Insurance

Jonip, do you have health insurance already? If so you could try and ask the same company for a quote/info about liability insurance. I have both health and household/liability insurance with the same people, it was convenient since they give you a discount on the second insurance if you have one with them already, plus they were able to address all my questions and gave me clear answers.

Re: Help With Renters/Liability Insurance

Thanks OOO. We already have health insurance through my husband's company. I've left a message with our contact at Zurich Direct to see if they can better answer our questions regarding the amount of coverage we'll need for our liability. 10Mill sounds like a lot of coverage, but maybe it has something to do with the building we live in and the area. Who knows?

I really appreciate your input. Again, many thanks.

Re: Help With Renters/Liability Insurance

You need contents and damage insurance and would be encouraged to get personal liability coverage.

My personal liability insurance covers for 5 million (IIRC) and satisfies the potential upcoming requirement that I have this as I have dogs that kill. Regularly.

It's worthwhile having contents and damage insurance - especially when you move

Lob, many thanks. We are required to get liability insurance for our kitten (she's a ferocious killer too). After reading over the GCI, it looks like a good thing for us to have regardless of our landlords requirements.

We are with Zurich, and today they really helped us out, in a quible about responsebility with our landlords.

I didn't find it terribly useful. When moving I found that water damage wasn't covered. So this excludes floors damaged from water, ceilings, windows and walls damaged or marked from condensation.

Our sink leaked and damaged our pull out rubbish bin and a couple of cupboards. And our bathroom with no window and a crap fan meant the ceiling paint flaked off. We lost most of our deposit.
