Household liability insurance

Hi,
I have recently moved to Switzerland and am in the process of renting a flat. I have been asked to take liability insurance. Is this required by law and what does it cover? The flat is not furnished and I'm not really worried about covering my contents. Also if this is needed can you recommend any particular company.
Thanks

Re: Household liability insurance

Hello-

Not sure I'll be much help as I'm not sure what this insurance is or all covers, but we were told we had to have it when we moved as well. Our relocation agency gave us a few places and people to contact. I ended up going with Die Mobilar out of Zug. I just pay once a year and forget about it.

Good Luck!

Re: Household liability insurance

Liability insurance covers you if someone has an accident in your home or on the property. You should also get contents insurance which is not the same thing.

Or if through your actions somebody else / something else is impacted. I think this is an insurance your have to take (also the regular liability insurance if that is not one and the same)

Re: Household liability insurance

It covers damages on property of other people, what includes the appartment you rent and any appliance you have on it. My experience says it's really positive to have it.

Re: Household liability insurance

Personal liability insurance is not required by law, but it can be required by landlords renting out property. It would cover damage to the property caused by yourselves. It's a private contractual issues, but if you don't take it out you probably won't get the property. It would also cover other damages caused by yourself and isn't very expensive. Generally most insurance companies will package it together with a household property insurance policy.

You could try looking here. Usually, a third party liability policy is combined with a house contents insurance.

I use Generali but have no idea if they are still competitive.

Re: Household liability insurance

I have used both AXA Winterthur and Generali for household and liability insurance. Generali's rate is not the most competitive. I am trying to make a claim as well - they don't have an online submission form (in English) like AXA and the claim lady speaks very poor English and is not the friendliest. If you don't speak German, I recommend against Generali.
