HMO experiences in Basel

Good morning,

unfortunately the search function didn't help me much (I found only one/two very old opinions) so I decided to open a new topic.

I am arriving in Basel in few weeks and I am looking info about basic health insurance. I've used comparis.ch to compare the options available: I've selected a bunch of insurers (SWICA, KPT, Sanitas...) but, at the time being, I am still undecided between GP or HMO model.

I don't have questions about the GP model (I suppose it pretty much depends on the one you choose...) but I would like to hear your opinions/comments/experiences about the HMO practices in Basel.

Here's the list of providers: https://en.comparis.ch/krankenkassen...gemeinde=basel

What about quality of care and availability? Any relevant experience?

Another concern is linked to the (presumed) impossibility/difficulty to find an english-speaking (or italian-speaking...or even a french-speaking) working there: I have checked their website and it's only in german... I know many educated people in Basel can speak english quite well (for sure, better than me...) but still I would like to be sure before signing an HMO contract...

Thank you in advance for your answers

Re: HMO experiences in Basel

I have been with the Visana HMO in Bern for about 5 years, and I am very pleased with Sanacare.

Umfassende medizinische Grundversorgung
  • Allgemeinmedizin und Innere Medizin
  • Gynäkologie, Schwangerschaftsbetreuung, Pädiatrie und Psychotherapie
    (in grösseren Gruppenpraxen)
Remember, the insurance company must provide all the basic insurance, laid out in law. So there isn't much to choose between them, only on customer service.

The HMO practices are where you need to watch out, check that the practice is large enough to do EKG, ultra sound & X-Rays. Does it have some specialists on the staff, and offers 24 hour 7/7 support?

Re: HMO experiences in Basel

First of all, thank you for the reply...and, yes, I think I will contact the HMO centers in order to be sure they provide the services you mentioned and asking whether they have english-speaking physicians or not.

Anyway, any other comments or experiences about these practices (Centramed Basel, HMO Gesundheitsplan Basel and SWICA HMO Basel) is really appreciated.

Have a nice evening

Re: HMO experiences in Basel

At the end of the day, I've decided for HMO option, since the services provided are adequate and providers near to my place.

To be honest, I'm quite surprised that none had HMO experiences in Basel

We've been with Centramed (Dr. Stefan Klarer) for ~15 years, and unfortunately had quite a lot of contact with them . No complaints whatsoever - quite the opposite. Not used any other GPs in CH, mind, but I still wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. And yes, he and several other doctors I've seen there all speak English (indeed, I've not met many Swiss doctors who don't) as, I think, do the receptionists.

Thank you very much for the reply.

Yes, I've checked HMO practices websites and they indeed have many english-speaking physicians, therefore language should not be an issue...that's why, I'm more interested in opinions concerning quality of care and physicians' consideration.

Anyway, other comments are very welcomed

Re: HMO experiences in Basel

Hi there,
The Santemed Centre from SWICA in Basel is also good with English and other languages. We haven't used them, but a colleague of mine - English married with a Spanish husband use them. They never had Problems, and been able to speak English during visits.

I would imagen all insurers have a HMO Center in Basel, and they all probably have English speaking staff.

Like mentioned before by Sbrinz, the Basic model is the same for all. It will be just depending on the premium.

Good luck in making the right decision for you

Re: HMO experiences in Basel

I used the HMO option when we first arrived in Basel (2002!). I quickly changed to the "any doctor" model, and have had no regrets about that at all. I find the flexibility and choice more than makes up for the higher premiums.

The reason I switched from HMO is that I didn't find the doctors I was dealing with very helpful/friendly. Of course things will have changed since then and the practice may be totally wonderful now!
