Needing quick Insurance (I found out I am pregnant :) and we are new in town)

Hello English Forum,... Once more returning for quetsions... and this time seems awkward because we had been perusing the info about Health Insurance for a while, and thought it would be pretty straight forward.

But, either we are a bit clumsy or it isn't as clear as it looks like.

I found out I am pregnant, my first one (although I have had past problems, so this is important for us to have a good pregnancy coberture, good health insurance and "fast". With Comparis we have seen some options, but it is all very confusing, because if you want something a bit mor ethan basic then it seems we go to private?

What we basically need would be advise on a good "company" that would cover pregnancy quite throughout this year and also understand what the supplements mean?

1. I will need to have my first visits and so far I have been able to use my home insurance, but being abroad they have already told me they won't be able to cover anything else...

2. We would like to get suggestions of companys and supplements

3. And any idea on how long it takes to hire the Insurance once applied?

Thank you and sorry for the excitement writing, we would love everything to ho well, and we just arrived two weeks and a day ago or so....

Vielen danke!

Whatever insurance you go for, check the terms carefully for 'pre-existing conditions'. It is quite possible that you wouldn't be covered for anything related to your pregnancy as you became pregnant before the insurance was taken out.

Congratulations and don't worry, things will be OK.

The health insurance is valid from day 1 of your arrival to the country. It doesn't matter if you don't have one right now, when you do it will be backdated to your date of arrival so you still pay for it and enjoy its benefits.

Were you pregnant already when you came ?

Only for any supplementary insurance, and it generally precludes pregnancy stuff within the first year.

But no problem for the base insurance.

Note whichever base insurance you take will cover the pregnancy. It will be difficult finding supplementary insurance which will cover the additional costs at this stage.

You will not get any supplementary insurance, why would any insurance company want to take you when they know the cost will be Chf3,4,5'000.-- or more for a premium of Chf 100-200.-- per month ?

Basic insurance for pregnancy is fine, it gives you a ultrasound every month, 5 or more visits to the gyn, usdualy no more than 2 per room at birth

Re: Needing quick Insurance (I found out I am pregnant :) and we are new in town)

Hi and congratulations!
I am 7 months pregnant now so i can maybe helo you a bit on what the insurance covers.. And that is everything for the basic one.
I have Assura. Its one of cheapest and still no problem at all. Since i think a year ago there is a law that the insurance has to cover everything, no matter how complicated the case is. ( aparently , before the covered just the basic but now everything that is ordered by your doctor with a recipe will be covered).
We pay for some upgrade on the insurance.. like for private room in hospital and alternative medice.. etc etc.. BUT this does not apply for pregnancy we found out! the extras you could arrange are only for sickness and pregnancy is not sickness.
So you might want extras for yourself in the future but you dont need it for the present. And if you want private room, or that your doctor is at the birth, then yes. you need private or half private and that costs minimum 600 per month (vs the 260 i pay monthly with all the extras..)
What i cannot help you with is if there is a minimum time you have to be insured before covering pregnancy... Once i heard it was 9 months before covering it but it might be wrong. I hope its wrong
hope this helps and let me know if i can helo you with more!

I haven't given birth in Switzerland, but to reassure you, the basic coverage seems ample based on the above (assuming other necessary care such as the birth itself, natural or by emergency c-section is covered, which I believe it is).

I gave birth in Norway 6 years ago, and the "normal" follow-up there was 1 ultrasound at approx. 20 weeks and a few visits (not even every month) to either a midwife or a GP. You may not see a gynaecologist at all (before, during or after birth). What kind of room you get is totally dependant on the hospital you give birth in, some have private rooms and some don't. No extra cost, just luck (or not).

Supplemental insurance is nice to have, but you'll get more than adequate care on the basic package.

Congrats!
