Buying Used Vehicle - Driving Away on Owner's Insurance?

OK, a mechanical question about the insurance laws for buying a used vehicle.

I'm buying a motorcycle from a guy who said that I can ride the bike home on his insurance and plates (both valid/current), that way I can get the bike right away and get my own insurance/registration handled here (as the bike is near Austria).

Is this legal? I guess it really comes down to trust from the seller that I won't keep the bike insured/registered under his name?

I have already emailed my insurance asking for a policy, but we'd like to get the transaction completed today and I'm not sure if this is a good idea or just to be a bit more patient

Yes - TIS

The Swiss simply trust that once you have the bike you'll then return the plates etc.

Re: Buying Used Vehicle - Driving Away on Owner's Insurance?

Just to follow up on dodgyken's helpful advice. I went to the StVA today with the current old registration and the old SG plates, the wonderful girl behind the counter was happy to switch to English as I stumbled around in German, took care of everything in under 5 minutes. Invalidated the previous registration and told me where to drop off the old plates, walked out a happy man!

Thanks again dodgyken.
