Cancel health insurance within one week?

Hi there,

I am a student who recently moved to Switzerland, and still do not have a residence permit (still haven't given biometric data).

A friend of mine signed me up for a Health Insurance company that makes me pay 250 francs a month, and I have signed it.

Only one week has passed and have found out that there are offers from other companies for less than 100 francs.

Is it possible to switch/cancel my health insurance since:
- I haven't made any payment yet.
- I still do not have a residence permit.
- Only one week has passed.

The thing is that with the back-payment for 2 months, this insurance costs me more for a couple months than the annual premium from the other.

PS. I know it is my fault, but this will not make things any better. Thanks beforehand your help.

Re: Cancel health insurance within one week?

You might be able to if you're quick. Policies can usually only be changed once a year in November (unless you're leaving the country). You'd need to arrange the new insurance I believe and then cancel the old one.

Where are you studying and what country are you from? Because sometimes students can get an exemption from paying for Swiss health insurance completely. Check with your uni on this asap. Here's ETHZ's info page:

Hello!

I think you should just call your health insurance and ask them all these questions. I wish you good luck!

Do students get less sick than non students? Are they less likely to get hit by a tram? Is it highly unlikely to need hospital treatment before your permit arrives?

I still don't see the key .. But well done to those who have decent insurance for less than 100chf .. Student or otherwise.

Student insurance is usually cheaper than the norm - Swisscare is just one example.

http://www.swisscare.com/en/all-plan...e-switzerland/

And as I said it may be possible to get an exemption so he may not have to pay anything at all.

Students get subsidised insurance so Chf 100.-- is probably not too far off the mark, but it's only available to students and tightly controlled.

If they get hit by a tram, it would be accident insurance and not health insurance that would be involved.

Re: Cancel health insurance within one week?

Not all students can do it, but some can UNDER specific conditions.

Everyone needs to have health insurance, that complies with some federal standards.

Now there is an option for foreign students to be exempt from having a contract with a swiss insurance provider, if they apply stating that they do already have some sort of insurance that is able to cover those standards.

If the student is an EU national, is insured in some way in his home country and has an EU insurance card, they don't need anything else, just to provide a copy of a valid card (is valid for 1 calendar year, so you have to request a new one every December and send a scanned copy in by January)

The card looks like this:

If the student doesn't have an EU insurance card, that means they're not insured so they need insurance. They can go "full Swiss" and pay upwards of 200 CHF, or they can get these "student insurances" for that are around 100CHF or less. Swisscare and CSS Student are two examples.

These are practically travel insurances covering you for your stay in Switzerland. IF you are exempt from the requirement to go full Swiss, then you can have one of these. If you do an internship or work within the limits of the student residence permit (15h/week max, or normal 100% during uni-holidays and when a leave-of-absence from studies is granted) I think you can keep them, but if you become fully employed you definitely have to stop them and go full Swiss.

Swisscare in particular can be quite the dicks if you don't mind me saying, since when you go full Swiss they will annoy you to pay them as well, or keep you for some notice period since they are not the normal health insurance but a travel insurance so it's fine to have both. However they present themselves as a normal insurance that's just cheaper.

Anyway, that's the way of insurances for students here, be very careful about what you do, and always make sure to look at official documents or ask the health insurance offices of your Canton to see what you can/should do.

If you can't get out of your current contract (I don't think you can; I could be wrong), make sure you will look into the premium reduction with cantonal support.

Subsidised after requesting it, and IF they are eligible. And I think it's not just for students, but generally for younger people with a limited income. If you don't work or haven't recently worked even a bit, I'm not sure you can get in though.

It all depends on whose income the cantons use to calculate the subsidy.

If you're a student and in the family policy, you have less of a chance of getting a subsidy if your parents are high-income than you would have if your parents are low-income.
If you have your own insurance policy, the cantons will use your financial situation as a calculation basis. But you will not receive the reductions some insurances give to families who insure all/multiple members in the same policy.

It's for anyone with a limited income. There is a yearly paper (link somewhere on the page you linked to) which differentiates the subsidy amount based on your place of residence, age, income, marital status and children.

I did, and they told me to write them a letter, because they cannot cancel the contract via the phone since I signed it. They told me I should have a good reason for the cancellation to be approved. (Which seems stupid. I am ok with paying one month since I singed up for, but giving companies the right to hold on to you for months seems not correct according to me).
I am sending the cancellation form tomorrow via post along with the reasons and offer from the other company.

As mentioned before by @[Today only] and @[Medea Fleecestealer], students have to pay less for insurance because they are subsidised by the government, as well as they have agreements with universities.
My potential future insurance is Advisor Swiss Insurance

Send your letter by registered/recorded delivery post - then they have no excuse they didn't receive it.

Sorry and warning, slightly off topic but:

What is the catch with Swisscare and why is it so much cheaper?

I literally just went this morning to purchase basic insurance from Aquilana and now I saw this (I'm an intern by the way).

EDIT: Welp, got excited for no reason. Gave Swisscare a call and they informed me canton Aargau does not accept private insurance policies. Which probably explains why my Canadian insurance policy got denied.

Hi guys,

Just wanted to let you know that my previous insurance has agreed to cancel my contract. I just have to send them the Police d'assurance from the other insurance company in order to complete the process.

Thanks again for all your contributions.

Re: Cancel health insurance within one week?

Yes you can.
But as as already mentioned. You may change your policy only once a year.
You could try Swisscare.
And if you are a student you could get a policy for much cheaper than 250CHF
Good Luck!
