Swisscare is for students only. Insurance for non-students will be significantly more expensive than their offering.

That said, if you're resident in Switzerland and visiting Australia, I don't see why your Swiss health insurance wouldn't cover you - and therefore, I don't see why you'd need Australian insurance.
No, it isn't. Have a look at the website Corbets.

The international health insurance EXPATLINE has been developed and designed for individuals who stay outside their home country for a minimum period of one year such as :
  • Employees on overseas assignments
  • Managers and executives
  • Employees of counsel and embassies
  • Family members of foreign workers
Not a student in sight.

One thing I would warn of cathyc is that with Swisscare you pay the bill first and then claim back the money afterwards. Also you may need to contact them before being admitted to hospital. Have a look under their Claims section for more info.

Perhaps because if treatment in Australia is much more expensive than treatment in Switzerland, it won't be (fully) covered under certain circumstances. Source
This website says that Swiss coverage is therefore insufficient for treatment in Australia. Also, KVG only cover emergencies.

Also, spending half a year in Australia every year will most likely not be considered "visiting".
Switzerland only covers emergencies while out of the country as I understand it - or at least the basic cover I have.

Yes, I can see that claiming is a more onerous task, you can't get bills sent direct. They even ask you to collect some together before asking for refunds.

I think it is probably best to leave things how they are, pay the Swiss insurance for the year, use medicare in Australia as I am paying for both now.
