Car insurance payment for 6 months.. is this possible?

Dear EF ers,

I have a question that I has not posted thus far on this forum.

I have a leased car and the lease ends in Jun'16. I am not sure if I want to buy the car or walk away from the lease. Nevertheless I have received a car insurance rechnung for the entire year 2016.

Now, if I walk away from the lease next Jun, will I get a refund of the paid amount?

Could you please enrich my understanding on this topic? I do plan to speak to the insurance company but thought of checking with the experts first

Nice evening everyone.

Cheers,
MM

Comparis.ch says that normally the auto insurance premium should be refunded pro rata temporis if the auto ownership changes hands. To confirm, you might wish to look at your insurance policy:

No. They keep the whole amount even if you only use 6 months. Sorry

What? You mean you don't pay for the periods of insurance you don't use?

You will get refunded even if you remove the plates for a few months, as I do with most of my bikes every year, all pro-rated.

So you mean the refund is triggered just by taking the plates off the car?

Re: Car insurance payment for 6 months.. is this possible?

When the plates are taken off the car the insurance company will contact you and ask if you would like for them to refund you. If you're planning to keep the plates off only temporarily, I think Axa offers to keep the sum in credit for future payments.

In any case, there is a dialogue with the insurer and one way or another you don't pay for the amount of time the car is not on the road. Same goes with the STVA (at least in ZH) and the annual tax.

Re: Car insurance payment for 6 months.. is this possible?

Thanks again everyone.. for the views.

I think most of the comments above are accurate. I spoke to the insurer. An email / telelphone discussion should suffice for a refund or can be adjusted against insurance for another car with the same insurer.

As for SVTA.. the same logic should apply. Probably it is a discussion that needs to happen when returning the plates. Can't be sure but no harm in trying..

Cheers,
MM

There is nothing to discuss.

Hand (or mail) in the plates and grey card, they will cancel it and send you the refund.

Re: Car insurance payment for 6 months.. is this possible?

This is also true if you switch plates between your cars. If you have a more expensive car that you keep off the road during winter you can get a pro-rata insurance and tax refund. However, you may want to ensure that you keep fire and theft insurance for it while it is hibernating.
