In order to get a Green Card insurance to travel through Europe you would have to apply to a European company. The USA is not part of the european agreement and therefore a U.S. insurers could not issue one. You'll find more information about Green Cards here and here.

Re: Insurance for car coming from abroad

I have seen some american registered cars in Europe and Switzerland last year. It seems that it is possible to drive here in Europe with American plates, which means that they are insured somehow.

If you are moving to Switzerland from Czech republic it should not be a problem to come to Switzerland with Czech plates. If you owned a car for more than 6 months you can import it for free. And I think that you can keep you Czech plates for a year before changing to Swiss. It is the same with driving licence. So why hurry to change the insurance and plates before coming to Switzerland. Keep the one you have until you get here.
Your Czech insurance should cover you for some time in Switerland and whe nyou get your address here then there is no problem to change registration and to get new swiss insurance

There are lots of Portugese andSpanish here who drive around with Portugese and Spanish plates, and they have been living in Switzerland for 20 years.

Re: Auto insurance in Switzerland with US plates: Catch 22

Thanks everyone for your replies.

My husband called the ADAC office today and spoke to a nice English-speaking lady. She confirmed that we could get insurance for our car upon visiting their office in Frankfurt or Bremenhaven. We need the car title, driving licence and something she called "tax" (?sp) of the car. (DH could not figure out what it was, we'll call her again if I do not find the explanation somewhere.)

The rate she quoted is around 150 Euro per month. She confirmed that the insurance's valid in Switzerland.

It seems that the problem is solved. Again, thank you all for your input!

I think the OP was trying to find the correct, above-board method to owning and driving a non-Swiss registered car in Switzerland / Europe

Re: Insurance for car coming from abroad [was: Catch 22]

I have been dealing with a similar issue and this is what I got.

Importing my car from the US to Switzerland via the Port of Genoa. My US insurance provider covers me for damages while shipping and driving. However, they do not cover for liability in Europe. That is the catch because most European countries could care less about the damage to your car, but you need that 3rd party liability.

I have been in touch with a few Swiss insurance companies who would insure me, no problem! But, they kept asking for the matriculation number. I would tell them I don't have one yet because I need to get the car to Swiss customs to get that matriculation number. However, in order to get the car out of the port and drive it, I need the insurance. So, its a catch-22. You can't get insurance without that number, but you need insurance to get the car to the place to get the number. If you want to pay a ton of money to have your car trucked from a port to your home then that is no problem as the trucking firms are insured. But, if you want to save a load of money and do it yourself you have to figure the insurance issue.

I did a search on www.comparis.ch and selected every company I could and found one that would insure me without the matriculation number. You can also call some insurance providers who may insure your car under the chassis number until you get the matriculation number. One provider suggested I go to the Geneva License Office and ask them. But, I think the best advice is to just shop around until you get a good local provider. I'm dumping my US based damage insurance because if I get into an accident here I know my life will be easier dealing with a local insurance firm.
