I'm going to be living in Geneva for 11 months from August and am driving out from the UK with a fairly old car (1997). I've found out I can keep my UK plates as its less than a year. Only trouble is finding insurance - Uk providors won't do longer than 60 days and swiss providors won't cover foreign plates (and it doesn't seem worth the hassle of changing).

Anyone got any experience of solutions - this must be a fairly common problem! I saw a thread from a couple of years ago suggesting zurich or the AA but both now appear not to be helpful.

My insurance broker seems confident that he can get my wife's car insured with Zurich whilst still on GB plates. The car is still in blighty so I will know for sure nearer to the time we bring it across (mid-August).

I found a company last year, as long as I had a UK address they were fine with it. Although you should check what would be the position if you had to claim. This is off the above so not sure if you would qualify:
"As long as you are a UK resident and your car is registered in the UK, we can arrange a policy that will allow you unlimited use of your vehicle between the UK and EU."

Looks interesting though, got my car registered at my parents, sent V5 to DVLA and they transferred change of address- no questions asked. Only thing to watch out for is tax- did mine over the internet last week.

Ohh and don't forget about getting MOT done as that is now registred on DVLA database.

Zürich insured our UK car for as long as our registration was valid. Only after two years of living here we registered the car locally. We needed to send them a copy of the import document that we obtained at the Swiss boarder.

I had UK insurance with a permo green card back before your car was made.

Our car was 1 year old, but as the other poster said I don't think the age of the car would make a difference for 3rd party cover.

I am moving to Geneva in August for one year 9 (or just under!) and Aj Insurance Service (http://www.ajinsurance.co.uk/motor/expats-insurance.html) have found me a quote to insure my Saab comprehensively on English plates for one year. It is not cheap but it seems much easier than getting Swiss plates for the year. My next issue is breakdown insurance – does anyone have experience of The Automobile Club of Switzerland or The Touring Club of Switzerland?

TCS will cover you and European breakdown - no probs, we done it and needed them when our car was on UK plates.
