Household insurance faux pas: cancellations and new

Hi all,

I have a weird situation hope some one can give me good advice. Last year I moved in with my partner but each of us kept our own individual household and liability insurances. No problem. This year, my insurance company "invited" me to have a policy for both of us together, and of course since I/we live in a bigger apartment with more stuff, the amount of coverage was greater and of course the price was higher than a single premium, but slightly less than what each of us was paying added together. Apples oranges perhaps, but I wanted to check with my partner first.

I comparison shopped the coverage on comparis.ch and did find a cheaper solution for the greater amount of coverage for both of us (more persons household). So I wrote a "Kündigung" cancellation letter to my current company, and signed a quotation for the cheaper solution new company. My partner happened to already have his single person insurance since last year with this less expensive company.

But, the insurance guy who "invited" me said no! I can not cancel as my contract runs out in 2014, this is my single person household insurance. I did not approve or sign the new multi-person offer he proposed for us.

One idea we had was to write another cancellation letter saying the premium increased this year and that I wanted to cancel because of that. But do I have to wait til I get my single person household insurance bill with my current company?

Meanwhile, the new company has sent me a bill that the offer I did sign is due, well, tomorrow! What if I don't pay? I already called the new company once and said I had this problem with my current insurance company.

The crux of my problem is: I don't want to be stuck paying two premimiums for the exact same coverage. (the only difference is that my current company has non-owner 3rd party car driving insurance -- I don't own a car, and I never drive anyone else's car here, my friends would not let me!! -- I tried to ask if I could take this off, but my current company said that it is fixed in the price) .

Any ideas what can I do?? Or am I really stuck? Sorry for the long post!! Thanks in advance, BruceFan

If you have not already done this, check out exactly what your contract states with regard to cancellation etc... and take it from there.

Jim.

Re: Household insurance faux pas: cancellations and new

Thanks for the tip Jim!

Well, I had a phone call from my potentially new insurance agency and they let me off the hook. And my old agency called too and offered me a 15% discount. Now the monetary difference between the two offers is only 60 CHF, and often the old agency has a sharing fund program sort of like dividends, and passes them onto to their customers, which could mean I end up with no difference at all.

so all, in all, I learned a few things about contracts and have learned to be loyal to my current company, even if I am paying a bit more "on paper".

They, both companies, were very nice to understand that, well, I don't understand much.
