Recently I received another letter asking for proof again (this time from the government, instead of the city of Zürich), but this time including a form that needed to be filled in by my Dutch health insurer. This is a mission impossible (once send, I'm sure I will never get back a filled in form), so I sent them even more proof (copy of the policy), but without the filled in form. Fingers crossed...
They are putting the emphasis back on your insurance company and are looking for a stamp and signature from them saying that they will provide minimum Swiss statatory cover with your insurance. Without this you have no chance. We have done this with a German company with our au pairs health insurance. This has been easier because the German company can read the small print, since we are in the German part of CH.

Re: Exemption from Mandatory Swiss health insurance - Links and Forms

Hi,
This forum helps me a lot. But I didn´t find anywhere the link to the official site of the health insurance dirction/office (Gesundheistdirektion). Finally I did, so for others who are interested in the application forms for the exemption from the health insurance in Switzerland, here it is

Re: Exemption from Mandatory Swiss health insurance

When my daughter returned from the UK in 2008 I successfully argued with the Immigration authority in Berne that she was covered by the UK National Health Insurance scheme. She left with a C permit and after 2 years away she was issued with a B permit. When she started work I put her on my Swiss insurance policy.

Re: Exemption from Mandatory Swiss health insurance

We wanted to maintain our BUPA cover here in CH, and expand it to comply with Swiss requirements. The underwriters there were quite interested, and followed our request up. They discovered that they would be able to cover everything apart from old age nursing care, and therefore were told by the authorities to forget it.

It really is a classic corrupt Swiss cartel. If one of the big foreign companies (BUPA etc.), ever manages to jemmy the window open, the Swiss medical insurance industry would look like a kicked ant heap.

Cheers

Jim

Re: Exemption from Mandatory Swiss health insurance

Since I prefer to do things directly than by the phone or mail, I went directly to the local office for the health insurance (städtische gesundheitsdienste) at Walchestrasse 31, 8006, Zürich. The guy there was obliging and help me with all the papers. He made a copy of my EU health care card, the document stating proving that I am here as a researcher and I signed the document, that, as he said, I will receive by the post (but for now, I am quicker than the post J ). And he will send it further. Now I have to wait for their evaluation.

Sure it's a cartel, that's nothing new ! Whilst cheaper health care may be nice, i'm not sure i would like to have a cheaper service when i need it.

If you have ever had the oportunity of trying the Swiss medical system andf the UK's medical system, i know which one i would go for !

Have a look at swisscare: www.swisscare-intl.com/ you will find out who can be exempted from the public insurance.

Re: Exemption from Mandatory Swiss health insurance

Hi all,
have anyone experience with applying for health insurance exemption due to both work and parental leave in EU state? I mean living in Switzerland, working abroad.
I am interested in how it works in Ticino.
Any idea, if there is such a nice website - as michaelacadova posted for Zürich - with all the forms in canton Ticino? I was searching for hours, but since my Italian is somewhere on "Come stai" level, I wasn't successful (or maybe it just doesn't exist?)
Thank you for your replies...

Re: Exemption from Mandatory Swiss health insurance

Unfortunately the website is only in italian (AFAIK). You will have to contact them by phone, as you need the exemption from them (once you are here).

Basically the bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the EU apply. As a basic principle, people have to get health insurance from the state they work in.

So after nearly 2 month I have the reply from the healt insurance company that I really don't have to pay for the swiss insurance since I have one at home.

Re: Exemption from Mandatory Swiss health insurance

Hi all, I'm currently enrolled in Germany as a PhD student. What is left in my thesis is the writing and since my husband live in Switzerland we decided that it would be better for me to move in with him and write my thesis there. I have applied for family reunion visa and i know that once i arrived in CH i need to change my visa to a permit. To do that i need to show a valid health insurance certificate. My question is, can i use my health insurance from DE? or do i need to open a new health insurance in ch? i do not wish to pay 2 health insurance. If i open a new one in CH can i be insured as a student eventhough i apply for family reunion permit? thx..I plan to move to Lausanne

Re: Exemption from Mandatory Swiss health insurance

BUPA (UK Based insurance company) International has provided excellent coverage worldwide and in Switzerland for me for the last eight years. I rarely use the Swiss policy I got to keep the local Gemeinde happy. BUPA or another private medical international policy is not to be compared with the NHS. Which incidentally works well for most of people most of the time.

Re: Exemption from Mandatory Swiss health insurance

I have a question which seems to come under this topic.

I recently sent off the form and my exception has been granted till the 8th of january. I only sent this form in a month ago so my exception is lasting under 2 months before i have to send in another one. Why did it only last two months?

I plan on contacting but thought I'd try to find out some information before I do.
Will my insurer have to send me out a form every two months with a new stamp and such?

Thanks for any info
