and with a monthly premium of about CHF 400 each it's best to claim for everything

It certainly would be for 400 chfs a month! My bill is about 210 chfs (franchise of 2000, includes basic and supplementary) and my medical bills for the whole of last year were well under 200 chfs, including asthma inhalers. I 'win' after only one month!

I really would recommend doing a quick 'monthly premium versus projected bills' calculation - it could save 100s of francs a year.

I thought the same until I had a (thank god) little accident last year while I was on unpaid vacation to take care of my daughter and I found out that my accident insurance is not separated from the illness insurance. I am with ASSURA and they won't pay a cent of the medical bill because I haven't reached the franchise. I can't understand why the Swiss can possibly support this system.
The Swiss seem to be very happy with their system -

As a Brit, I also think the CH system is quite good.

The model allows for some flexibility in that if you aren't a timewaster it doesn't cost much to have insurance (note: I am not implying that all people who go to the Dr are timewasters).

Where I see some abuse is when Drs ask for more tests or offer a prescription for over-the-counter products that are not covered by the insurance company (although the writing the prescription is).

Another example: during my wife's pregnancies (esp the first) we had extra tests "just to be safe" when really they weren't needed. We didn't bother the second time around.

That all said, the health services here are actually quite good, because they are funded via this - what I call - semi-private insurance system. Purely public ones, like the NHS, suffer because they are fully at the mercy of Whitehall bureaucrats whose only function is to cut costs.

I think this has been pretty much answered by Longbyt, Kodokan and Suzagna.

She can report the accident/send the bills off if she wishes to but she will only be reimbursed once she's gone over her franchise.

If your friend is a foreign student then she qualifies for student insurance and she may only have a 100.- annual deductible. So in this case it's a no brainer.
Thanks, I get the bit about filing the bills for reimbursement, but I actually meant to ask if there is a need to fill out the accident report form in this case?

"the accident report form" - where did the form come from? If you want a bill to be paid by any Insurance, I'd guess you'd probably need it - but this time I am guessing.
