Car Insurance - No Claims Bonus

Hi there,

Can anyone tell me what I need to ask for when canceling my car insurance to ensure that I get my proof of no claims bonus. I'm in the German speaking part of the country and will soon be returning to the UK and would like cancel my insurance as soon as possible.

Cheers

Thirsty

Re: Car Insurance - No Claims Bonus

Hi,

If you look at your insurance bill (rechnung) it will tell you exactly how much bonus you get.

Eg. your bill will be something like this :

Haftpflicht Jahres-Grundprämie Stufe %der netto prämie
Grund pramie

2071.20 0 30% 621.40

Teilkasko 248.40 248.40
Stempelsteuer 5% 43.40

Unfallverhütungsbeitrag0.75% Auf Haftpflicht 4.70
Beitrag At.74 und 76 SVG 4.20

Saldo zu unseren Gunsten 922.10

So as you can see, the bonus is 70%.

So whenever you see what percent is in the ground premium that is all you pay and the rest is your no claims bonus, so if you just take a copy of the bill with you and that should do the trick.

Re: Car Insurance - No Claims Bonus

Is my UK no claims bonus (4 years) transferable to the Swiss system. Just looking for insurance for my new (2005) Swiss car. Thanks

the swiss system is the other way round from the uk system, here you get all your no claims bonus up front, and if you claim you start to lose it, so you wont have to prove anything.

Re: Car Insurance - No Claims Bonus

Thanks! It's quite different from the UK system. I've spent the last couple of hours trying to find out about the system. There isn't a "sticky" post on Car Insurance is there?
We had a shock when we got our first quote. My boyfriend is non EU and he had to do the full driving test which he passed a couple of weeks ago. Whe we applied for car insurance he is now classed as a new driver, even though he's been driving for 20 years! So, we are doing the insurance in my name. When I insure my car is anybody insured to drive it?
Confused!

yes generally anyone can drive your insured car, there are some exceptions, your best bet is to contact an insurance broker tell them what you need and let them sort it all out!

Are you the owner of the car? if so, you can insure it. Anyone with a valid driving license can drive.

You can use this to negotiate premium with the insurer.

I needed to do the driving test too. On the back of my license is the date that I first passed my exam back home. I used this date when applying for insurance, not the date I passed the Swiss test.

Re: Car Insurance - No Claims Bonus

We collect the car on Wednesday. The garage asked us who would be the main driver and we said my boyfriend- although it's probably 50/50. Now I am not sure if it's acceptable for him to be registered as the main driver and have the car in his name and for me to be the main insurer! I will have to get him to call the garage again i think.

the insurance has to be in the name of the owner of the car

Our policy is in my husband's name, with me as the main driver. His nationality would cost us CHF 100 more than mine

Anyone can drive the car - since the car is insured. If someone under 25 drives and has an accident, an increase in deductible is standard.

Re: Car Insurance - No Claims Bonus

The date on the back of my partners licence is the date he did the Swiss test- about 2 weeks ago! He did the "Kontrollfahrt" a year or so ago in Solothurn and failed (another story..) and didn't drive for about year as was unsure whether to stay in CH. Now, I have moved here and he decided to do the full test in Zürich- and thank God passed. His licence was stamped "ungültig in der Schweiz" after failing the Konrtollfahrt which is i suppose why he has now a brand new licence. Gosh, he has had so many hurdles in his life... Oh to be EU!
I converted my UK licence to Swiss and the date on the back of mine is 1995 when i first did my test.

As long as his original license remained valid, he might be able to have that date changed.

BTW my husband is EU and i'm non-EU - and i'm cheaper to insure as the main driver.

great, will have to change that then with the garage. But my boyfriend reckons he wil get problems on the Serbian borders if he drives to see his family alone in a CH car in my name.
Too many complications in all directions.....

He is Non-EU and a NEW driver! He was about 4 times more to insure than me!

Maybe we can get that date changed then. Will ask him to phone the Strassenverkehrsamt to see. He still has his other licence with the stamp on !
