Health insurance for newborn

Hello

I am due to give birth end of March. Does my basic insurance cover the baby if anything is wrong with the baby upon delivery or does the baby have to have its own medical insurance before it is born?

I have asked for medical insurance for my baby but my medical aid is taking so long and i was worried if i give birth tomorrow, would my baby be covered at least under my insurance if her insurance has not been formalised yet?

Thanks for advice.

Rgds

Re: Health insurance for newborn

Do you have swiss insurance ?

You are not required to use the same insurance company for your child - I would phone your insurance company (just keep asking until they transfer you to someone who can manage the phone call in English if you can't handle German/French/Italian)....and sort it out ASAP.

If they don't give you the answers you want/need, then there are plenty of other health insurance companies out there that would like your business...personally, our kids are insured with Visana and we are with Groupe Mutuel for the adults, but that is what Insurance Jenny (from the forum) set us up with at the time, to match our needs...

Re: Health insurance for newborn

I'm guessing here but I would expect your insurance will cover anything arising out of the birth. If it doesn't then insurance for your baby will be back dated and you will be responsible for premiums from that date. I doubt very much you could set up insurance before the birth. Either way, you shouldn't have to worry insurance wise.
Good luck! Exciting time!

Hi I have just had my baby, and the baby's first month is covered by your own insurance, after that your baby will need its own.

Good luck

Actually, I was told by our health insurance that it is better to let the insurance company know beforehand if you are going to have a baby. They make a note of it and, if there are any complications during birth you don't have to worry about who's going to pay what.

I called my health insurance saying I wanted to insure my children with them about a month before the due date. I paid premiums for the children after birth, but not for any time before.

I had enough other things to think about - I was glad to sort this out beforehand.

Until the child is over 12 the premiums seem to be about thruppence h'appenny. (i.e. not much). Wait until the ungrateful little toe-rag is not so little and becomes an adult. CHF250 (every two months)!

I love him anyway.

You can and should get insurance for your baby before it is born. If you are going to get supplementary insurance it is really in your best interests to do it before the birth. Reasons being it will be much more difficult to get if there are any complications.....

I agree with Crumbs - if you tell them before the birth and arrange the policy then you will have full cover for any complications and needs the child has. Also infant policies seem to have no deductable.

My insurance guy said we should do this.

The policy is with Sanitas as is the mother's. I don't know whether the mother having full private status has any impact.

Yes, this is the correct advice.

The new-born is covered on the mothers insurance but if you want supplementary insurance you should sign up before the child is born.

Re: Health insurance for newborn

Okay, this is a bit off topic but I just wanted to let you know my experience so far with insurance and pregnancy... if you are generally insured in a specific Swiss Canton, you want to try and make sure you have the baby in a hospital in that canton, otherwise you may not be fully covered (found that out because I am registered in St. Gallen but spend most of my time in Graubuenden). We've also already informed our insurance company about the baby and he will be covered once he is born. We only start to pay for him the moment of the birth. Good luck!

Re: Health insurance for newborn

Agree with the others. You should get insurance before delivery. If ever your child has health issues, insurance companies are allowed to reject it after birth or request a health certificate and exclude converage for its condition.

You don't pay before birth and can still change the name within 3 months of birth.

We are in the same situation and I called my insurance broker. Basically if you take the complimentary insurance BEFORE the birth, the child cannot be rejected and is not subject to the health insurance questionnaire.

If done AFTER the birth the child is treated as any other insurance applicant and all forms must be filled out and possible medical exams.

Re: Health insurance for newborn

I sorted out the insurance before birth and I was so pleased I did - my son arrived early and needed special care for 3 weeks - resulting in a bill of over 25k - thankfully there was no argument over the insurance

Re: Health insurance for newborn

Its a common story, we sorted out some insurance months ago for a woman in our village and just last week the baby came two months early. The and mother baby are fine but the little tyke has to be in an incubator for two months at least...

As it has been said before, if you get supplemantery insurance before the birth, the company has to accept you. If this woman had tried to get this insurance now it is very doubtful that any company would accept the child....

In a sense the same principle applies for adults as well. The best time to get insurance in this country is when you don't need it, because if you find yourself in a situation where you do need it, and you don't have it.. well you aint gonna get it

Ahh back to work..

To add my voice - you really should get insurance before hand. If there are any problems at birth then these will not be covered by your insurance (this is how my insurance guy explained it).

By having the insurance before birth you avoid such problems.

You also don't have to pay anything to set it up. You only start paying from the month of birth and as Not All There said it is so cheap as to next to nothing.

Re: Health insurance for newborn

We were advised to get insurance before the child was born; and yes there were complications so it was a good job we did. You dont have to pay premiums before he/she has arrived; but will do from the month he/she comes; back dated if they dont arrive on the 1st of the month

For peace of mind I would not wait; you will have plenty to do after his/her arrival and no time and no energy to do it

Re: Health insurance for newborn

You can good cover for kids, KVG and VVG from 65-80 chf per month (depending on you canton that is). There are also some companies that offer really good deals if you have a larger family, next to nothing....

Re: Health insurance for newborn

For those of you whose babies experienced problems at birth (sorry to hear and hope they are fine now), which type of insurance did you have to cover the costs? Was it just basic or did you have some supplementary ones?
