| I have read most of the reply and I have to say that after living in 6 EU countries the worse one for car insurance is UK indeed.
- most "continental" insurance companies cover you with a 365 days "Green Card". UK only 14 days - The 'continental' companies can offer full european cover, and 365 geen card due to the fact that as most "continental" cars have the steering whell on the left. So the actuarial risk of accident is far greater driving a right hooker in LHD countries, hence the limitation. Full continental cover is available in the UK at a cost (which is still less than Swiss insurance) and for superior cover than you get here.
- only in UK you have to call the insurance company asking (?) them the permission to bring your "own" car abroad. See above, it's to do with risk my old son.
- only in UK you need a "MOT certificate" to pay both the insurance and road tax Not so, you need insurance and M.o.T to tax the car. UK insurance is dependant upon the car legal for road usage I.E has valid tax & M.o.T if it's on the road or on SORN if off.
- only in UK your "own" insurance pays you if a third party damages your car Yes and then the cost are reclaimed from the 3rd party, unless you want your car to go unrepaired until the 2rd parties insurance to pay for the repair. | |

UK insurance is cheaper and simpler than here, eg My car:
UK fully comp (and that means everything including breakdown -£425
FR with the same cover + 30 % of the value of the car if written off - €630, valid here, but not for Swiss registration purposes.
CH No parking damamge, no eaten by weasely things, no recovery CHF2,200
