Annual health Care Bill for someone in general good health

Hi all,

just trying to get my head around the various packages for my health care but to get the best value i need to understand roughly how much i'd spend on health care over the year but as I’ve no idea what it costs to go to the doctors so its quite hard how to gauge it.

I'm in good health and over the last year i think i went to the doctors less than probably six times, all for minor things like throat infection and getting put on a course of antibiotics so on that basis what would you say would be my annual bill for my health care?

any suggestion welcomed

Also depends on your age. I'm in my early 30s and pay approx 300/month.

There are 2 factors that have biggest influence on the monthly rate for your insurance:
- canton where you live (Geneve/Vaud much more expensive than Fribourg)
- deductible: how much of the potential cost are you going to pay yourself

If you are young and healthy and need only the basic insurance (LaMal) then take the maximum of the deductible (2500chf). You can check many scenarios on Comparis.

Re: Annual health Care Bill for someone in general good health

Simple. If you are young and healthy take the highest excess possible (2500 CHF?) and if possible pay annually (ouch) or quarterly.

Then it simply comes down to what you want:
choice of dr
repatriation to hospital of choice (although this might be covered by accident)
private/4-bed/general ward
herbal/alternative medicine option
eyes
etc.

These options are much of a muchness and will increase the costs, but fundamentally, they are not related to how healthy you are, more the type of cover you want.

Then speak to several insurance brokers (they all have their favourite supliers) and get a couple of quotes.

Ours likes Assura, who are very cheap, but they include the costs of medicine in the excess (i.e. we have to pay that) c.f. others only include Dr fees.

You can get good comprehensive cover alternative, transport and overseas cover with a deductable of 1500 chf for less than 200 a month.....

Unless you have a better source than Comparis that you would like to share, that is not possible in Zurich. The canton you live in makes a huge difference. For example my boss lives in canton Luzern and for identical cover with the same insurer, I would pay 50% more.

I also had to smile at the OP being in general good health, but going to the doctors six times a year. That's once every two months. For me general good health would be once every two years.

My friend, I have access to health insurance offering programs, cos thats what I do all day. Now Zurich has 3 price zones, and I can find comprehensive insurance ranging from 197 - 220 chf in all zones. I can also find the same insurance from different companies for much more than that. But you are right, Luzern is a lot cheaper

I assume you are a broker? If so I will come and talk to you come renewal time. The best I can get from Comparis for 'standard model' basic with a CHF 1500 deductible is CHF 237 a month. I currently pay 200 a month for GP model with a CHF 2000 deductible, but that includes a CHF 30 contribution from my employer.

Re: Annual health Care Bill for someone in general good health

I dont know if I'm missing something but when i work out the cost per year against the excess, it seems more reasonable paying more each month and less excess:

If i say my annual bill per year is 1000 CHF for someone who is in good health and factoring in a bit of a buffer, it still works out better to go for the one with the least amount of excess, doesn't it?

Excess : .......300 ..........500 ...........1000 .....1500 ...........2000 ..........2500
Annual cost : 3840 .........3696 .........3348......3000 ...........2652 ..........2292
Overall Cost : 3140(-700) 3169(-500) 3348(-0) 4500(+1000) 3652(+1000) 3292(+1000)

have i got my sums wrong here or does the higest price one seem to be a better deal that the rest?

could i be over-estimating how much the average "healthy persons" annual bill is?

thanks,

I'm not sure, but I think you normally pay the first 10% as well...

Re: Annual health Care Bill for someone in general good health

With Swica, you pay for medicine and doctors and hospital up to the excess. Then 10% of the rest, until you've paid 600 CHF, then it's all paid for.

I go to the docs maybe twice a year. Last time I did the sums, it worked out best to have max exces. The rule of thumb is: if you're healthy, go for max excess. If you're not, go for min. Anything else, you're saving or losing a few tens of francs either way. Probably.

Re: Annual health Care Bill for someone in general good health

1000 chfs is huge, I think, for an average 'well' person. Last year, I spent about 100-150 chfs, which was mostly asthma inhalers and the annual flu jab. An average doctor visit is 50-100 chfs, depending on time spent discussing how sick you are (my pre-driving licence check-up took about 30-40 mins and cost about 100chfs).

I pay about 180chfs for basic with Assura (2000chfs franchise), and 38chfs for supplementary to cover off all the things that Castro lists above. I'm 39 and live in Vaud, so these figures can perhaps be reduced for younger people living in other cantons.
