Pretty shocking -- yes, he had pancreatic cancer, which can be a quick killer (although he battled it for 7 years), but he only recently stepped down for good as CEO of Apple and I hadn't realised he was quite so sick.
The BBC has more.

Very sad news. Steve Jobs had the vision and determination to fight for what he believed, despite all the commercial pressures and the near collapse of Apple he stuck to his ideals and led the company to being one of the highest valued companies worldwide. Along with his development team Jobs changed the way we now live our digital lives. He died way too young.
My real regret for him? That he never made peace with his real father before he passed.

The first computer I used was an apple, in maybe 1983? It was the year my parents separated. My father taught my siblings and I very basic programming so we could incorporate it into our make-believe games. I also remember 'little brick out', the first computer game I played. I think my dad still has the computer in his basement!
R.I.P. Steve.

I never liked his sect guru status (and attitude). But I'm sad that a very bright and innovative mind has ceased to exist at such a young age and in such a gruesome way.

What an outstanding set of life achievements
Its a sobering thought to consider how many hundreds of millions of people his ideas have touched
Like they say about life: it's not how long it is but what you do with it

As an industry insider my thoughts and opinions are probably out of kilter with those of the general populous. However 56 is way too young, and it was a nasty way to die. So I'll leave it at this:-
A great visionary, a great innovator, a great businessman, a great leader - he was all of those things, and more.
However, "A great man is not necessarily a good man"
R.I.P Steve. One thing's for sure; you certainly did change the world.

An overachiever in every sense, and the reason why I both love and hate Apple as opposed to being complete indifferent to it. I really hope with his passing that Apple won't be overtaken by the bean counters. The best candidate for CEO in my opinion was always Jonathan Ive, a man infused with Apple DNA and the vision to carry things forward.
RIP SJ
