Get ready for a "rude" winter. Here it comes!

Sun's 11-year cycle means we're in for Arctic freeze this winter, say scientists

Your signature seems strangely relevant in this case...

Wander what Mr Twain would have said about the Daily Mail? Probably about the same as the rest of us say!

The one big caveat is whether SIM's data is accurate.

Scientists in the field appear to believe it is - but as the UV changes it sees are so large compared with previous methods, they would prefer confirmation.

Commenting in Nature Geoscience, Katja Matthes from the Helmholtz Centre in Potsdam, Germany, describes the results as "intriguing, albeit somewhat provisional".
"The trends seen in the SIM observations are still under discussion and remain to be confirmed," she writes.

She also points out that SIM measures only a proportion of the ultraviolet region of the spectrum.
Whilst we're at this level of "science", any recent news from CERN about c not being c any more, as it were...?

Looks like the article is ringing true! Its so cold in the Lausanne area that the lake is steaming during the morning hours - the water is warmer than the air. It wouldn't be so bad but for the wind - sometimes sounds as if the house might blow away it is howling so much!

Lausanne is still rather "warm" compared to other parts of CH (and Europe) did you see the pics in Le matin though from geneva? with the ice wind covering all in its path. pretty neat (if you dont have it happen to you of course )

Lac gruyere is starting to freeze over now. I find it weird it hasnt....when I lived in Minnesota the lakes were frozen much quicker and even the Mississippi river even froze over....

Bundle up

Re: Get ready for a "rude" winter. Here it comes!

I think the rocks in Switzerland might be thinner than in Minnesota: there are many places here where geo-thermal heat extraction is economically attractive, and generally Switzerland seems to be much warmer than Bavaria.

Every winter in Nürnberg we had a few nights with temperatures below minus 12 deg C, but here on the plains they are rare. I had to leave Nürnberg one morning at 7 am and the temperature was minus 22 deg C, the fuel cap was frozen to the tank, and I could only open it after warming it with hot water.

I looked at the journal but I could not find the article as described in the Daily Mail
