The Power Vacuum. Who will fill it?

Imagine, if you will, a world in which the United States has taken all its troops home and closed all its overseas military and naval bases, leaving, inevitably, a power vacuum which is sure to be filled by someone.

Who would that someone be?

What would a world abandoned by an isolationist United States look like? Better? Worse? Safer? More dangerous?

Would the United States itself be better off? How?

Mexico!!!!!!!!
But we'll wait till the world is out of budget Levi's and then hold them to ransom!

There wouldn't be one superpower. Mainly China but Russia, Saudi, Brazil and Iran would all play bigger roles. Israel, South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Australia and Canada would play smaller roles.

Wait....have you posted in the correct forum?

Re: The Power Vacuum. Who will fill it?

... and there was I thinking this thread was about flouncing members, new rules and alternative web-sites that have been set up to remain in the spirit of the original EF.

If you were to believe the (US) politicians, the world would be a more dangerous place and the US would be poorer: their troops are there to keep the peace and protect overseas interests. Not quite sure what that means, but part of it is to flex muscle, show what a big willie they've got and make sure people "stay in line" and don't rock the boat.

As for the rest of us, in most places I think it would be business as normal. There's not exactly much of a threat to Europe these days and the US doesn't exactly do much in the Africa, where pirates and Chinese hold sway.

South America is firmly in the US' pocket (except for Hugo of course) and will tow whatever line the US throws at them.

Disclaimer: this thread may contains gross generalisations of a gargantuan nature in line with the EF's new terms and conditions of usage.

The UK has a lot of experience, as do Germany, France, and Austria-Hungary!

Vacuum can be filled by void. Therefore I see "The Local" as potential candidate given the new T&Cs.

The Power Vacuum. Who will fill it?

James Dyson usually comes up with a solution.
