| | | Swiss man gets caught smuggling 261 Mexican tarantulas at Zurich airport.
10 died
Apparently they're quite valuable.
They're protected, so were sent to the Zoo.
I understand he was allowed to keep his 72 meat-eating centipedes, and the 665 other tarantulas, because these aren't protected (Maybe they can protect themselves? ).
So if anyone is looking for a new pet, maybe contact this guy? Here is the full story, for todays German reading exercise.
One would think we had enough Mexican creapie crawlies in Zurich already, eh Ouch?

I wonder what those people do/say when they get caught - do they go the "oops, how did those 586 arachnids sneak their way into my baggage" route or the "what, you aren't allowed to bring these in?"

That's how we normally carry our spiders around.

When I saw this thread on the home page, the title was "Re: Swiss man gets caught smuggling 261 Mexican..."
I was really having difficulty reconciling the image of Mexico on any of the Swiss borders, a dark truck with a false back and lots of people cramped in it driving up to an international airport, and so on and so forth...
But then, I'm not sure the actual story made more sense. Who tries to smuggle tarantulas????

Its enough that we have disease-ridden ticks inhabiting the forests here why on earth does anyone in their right mind want to bring in hundreds of tarantulas?
Answer - the guy is not in his right mind - take the spiders off him and his passport too.

well, im very happy to hear that this person got caught. People like him, through their greed and ignorance have caused more than half of all our exotic animals to become critically endangered or extinct, due to their aggressive poaching methods. People steal them from their native countries, and sell them on the black market for quite a bit of money. The fact that only ten died, seems really good. Usually its alot higher. Next to the drug trade, the exotic pet trade is the secound biggest black market industry, it brings in billions a year. Its really sad and makes me very angry. Our children are loosing so much of their natural enviroment because of stupid people like him. People who buy exotic animals, should also be aware and conscious of where and from who they are buying from. Usually its straight from the black market. Monkeys, birds, lizards, tortios, all are victims of the greed of people. Hope he sits in jail for quite a while.
