| | | QANTAS grounds their fleet ( updated planes taking off again for now )
The Spirit of Australia has grounded its entire fleet. | Quote: | | | | QANTAS grounded its entire domestic and international fleets indefinitely last night - stranding thousands of passengers - as it declared it would lock out all workers engaged in industrial action.
| | | | | More on SMH
Pilots say the CEO is mad: | Quote: | | | | Qantas' decision to ground the entire Qantas fleet is "holding a knife to the nation's throat" and CEO Alan Joyce has "gone mad", the Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA) says.

My eyes are on how the PM responds to Qantas grounding all planes. She is damned no matter what she does. Me thinks the CEO of Qantas picked his time to make a political play. The PM is on the backfoot with carbon taxes and there vwill be little sleep for her staff tonight.
I bet there will be a leadership challenge in Labor soon. Rudd is too right for a full union backing, have they got a union backed man on the front bench?
As far as Qantas flying again well this is de ja vu. Just think back to the pilot strike.

The union wants more Superannuation, contributions to an industry training fund to improve job security, demand for 100 days leave per year for the purposes of attending EBA meetings etc. http://www.twu.com.au/Home/Campaigns...antas_14_4_11/

| | | Re: Second Qantas jet suffers engine problems | Quote: | | | | | | | | | | I think she shoved her foot in her mouth, even more than normal. She has sided with the business ahead of the unions... no wonder the CEO of qantas played this move. It is a shrewd game and one, I am certain, that every union leader around the world is watching closely.
It is going to be a fierce day in parliament tomorrow...

I think with hotel rooms booked by the hundred if not thousands in advance as well as telling catering company DRW a week in advance that their services are no longer required, Joyce wanted to do something like Patrick Stevedores did in 1997/98, and eventually focus on the very profitable subsidiary Jetstar operating from Asia. Qantas is no longer a nationalised airline of Australia ( no longer tax payer funded ) for more than a decade and is basically free to determine what it wants to do. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15506391 | Quote: | | | | Wage costs are higher than the industry standard for ground and cabin crew staff, servicing contracts expensive and pension entitlements unaffordable in the long run.
Qantas is also a Pacific-based company trying to refocus on Asia as opposed to its older traditional markets in the North Atlantic.
The CEO, Alan Joyce, has seen a path to a more profitable economic future in its spin-off airline Jetstar, which is considerably more lucrative than its parent.
That's because Jetstar Group, based in Singapore and Vietnam, employs cheaper Asian staff and ancillary support services such as leasing and engine maintenance.
With a new, wealthier middle class emerging in China and South East Asia, Qantas now wants to tilt in that direction and that has angered unions, which accuse the company of wanting to destroy the brand and replace their members with cheaper labour. | | | | | He did not pay himself a pay rise of 71% but the Board of QANTAS did, presumably for making (unpopular but required) decisions in the best interest of shareholders or otherwise face the same fate as Ansett Australia did.
Not all unions are against the action.
The Flight Attendants’ Association of Australia has backed the extreme action as “necessary”... Courier Mail

| | | Re: Second Qantas jet suffers engine problems Fair Work ends Qantas industrial dispute SMH | Quote: | | | | QANTAS planes could be back flying tonight after the industrial relations umpire, Fair Work Australia, ruled at 2.08am today that the dispute between the airline and the unions should be terminated.
The verdict gives the warring parties 21 days to resolve their dispute and reach an agreement that would be binding. If they fail to do so, there will be compulsory arbitration.
| | | | | | Quote: | | | | Correspondents say the ruling is likely to be seen as a victory for Qantas, which has been seeking to end long-running disputes with three unions, and for the government, which wanted the stand-off resolved quickly. | | | | | BBC |

Yeah, step one of Joyce's gamble has gone his way ... let's see how stage two goes for him ...
I think he's going to order his 'negotiators' to just continue to stonewall until compulsory arbitration, in the hope that this will go his way as well.

What the Unions want: http://www.afr.com/p/business/compan...foO8ijqgol4e1O
Not forgetting that the conditions demanded by the pilots were that all pilots on any flight in the Qantas Group network that is flown over the same route that a red tail "may" fly, will be paid the same as Qantas pilots. That means, essentially, that all Jetstar pilots would get a huge payrise (substantial). In the alternative, the union was demanding that Qantas be stopped from codesharing flights with any other airline within the Qantas group. It can also be viewed as being designed to stop Jetstar being used on Qantas routes – the aim wasn´t to bring up Jetstar pilot pay, quite the contrary, it was to stop the growth of Jetstar.Totally unreasonable IMO.
Some of these demands are typically union rubbish. QANTAS International is unsustainable with the wages they already pay. It's either take advantage of the Asian market or shut down. Any fool should be able to see that.
100-150k for an engineer +perks and benefits
300-400k for a pilot +perks and benefits
quite high already.
I'm on the side of QANTAS this time. I understand why pilots would feel threatened, but the demands they are making have no relation to this. Half of it is free/cheap tickets for themselves or family. Pilots don't make as much money as CEOs (which is a different discussion) but their claims shouldn't include trying to get their family vacation cheaper.

Hmm ... increased profit posted for this year ... CEO gets a mega bonus ... and the company is unsustainable? Must be a hell of a dip in the market projected, even greater than the banking crisis!!

Qantas’ low-cost arm will get its first eight Boeing 787-8s from late 2012 to mid-2014 to fly international routes to New Zealand and Asia, with the remaining seven Dreamliners from mid-2014.
In addition to boosting the number of weekly services to current Asian destinations, the 787s will allow Jetstar to launch new routes to Europe and North America.

These new routes should be interesting.
