I guess the US put sanctions on front wheels for airplanes being sold to Iran again. Ugh....

Thank you TheLocal Jrspet ....I actually saw this video the other day on Blick. I was quite surprised, that there weren't any sparks coming from under the fuselage. I can only imagine the frictional forces that were taking place during the incident....

There is a procedure where fire trucks spray foam on the runway in the event of a landing gear failure. Too grainy to tell.

...the link says, that the FAA discourages the use of foam, as it may deplete supplies in case the plane would catch on fire. Also, the foam may reduce effectivness of the brakes, which would increase the possibility of the plane overshooting the runway.

Re: IranAir B727 Pilot lands plane without nose gear

Normally this plane should have crashed, but I guess its been made illegal. Se below....

FAA To Ban Plane Crashes
OCTOBER 30, 2011 | ISSUE 47•43

WASHINGTON—In what officials are calling "a much-needed policy shift," the Federal Aviation Administration announced this weekend that it would ban all plane crashes. "After a careful review of flight data from the past 25 years, we've determined that customers, pilots, and the airlines themselves would benefit significantly from a strictly enforced no-plane-crash policy," said FAA administrator Randy Babbitt, adding that pilots involved in fiery plane wrecks could face a steep fine or even suspension. "The practice of crashing an airliner into an ocean or mountain will no longer be tolerated. American consumers deserve better." According to industry sources, most commercial airlines are planning to fit in as many crashes as possible between now and Jan. 1, when the ban officially goes into effect.

Kudos to the pilot- he's a hero. Can the story about his punitive suspension be added to the epic fail thread?

His "suspension" is probably so he can work through the ordeal with a head shrink of sorts. And it's probably fully paid to.

From how I read the story, that's not how the pilot took it...

Re: IranAir B727 Pilot lands plane without nose gear

Another pilot from LOT did it safely.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15543315

Quote:
A Boeing 767 carrying 230 passengers has made an emergency landing at Warsaw airport after its landing gear failed.

The plane, which was travelling from the US city of Newark, in New Jersey, landed on its belly without its wheels.

It had circled above the Polish city for over an hour burning up fuel as the airport was prepared for the crash landing.

The Polish airline Lot, which operated the flight, said all safety procedures had worked and that no-one was injured.

In that case, expect to see loads of "landing gear" listings on ebay from Ryanair.

Re: IranAir B727 Pilot lands plane without nose gear

Is this thread is going to be one of those "my crash was more dramatic than your crash" deals?

If you read the aviation press, you'll see a loose average of around 50 airplane crashes every month that include fatalities. Of course, this figure is just to give a general overview, sometimes there are clear months, but some helicopter is always going to hit an object and some bright spark with stripes on his shoulders is going to fly his aluminum tube into a piece of granite camouflaged in a cloud. The repetitive ones are landing in poor weather, airshow displays and the CFIT (Controlled Flight into Terrain) as mentioned.
