Cleric bans women from touching bananas

An unnamed Islamic cleric based in Europe has issued a ban on women touching fruits and vegetables resembling the male sexual organ to avoid "sexual thoughts".

The Egyptian news website Bikya Masr on Wednesday quoted the cleric whose diktat featured in an article on el-Senousa, a religious publication. The cleric has said that women should not even get close to bananas or cucumbers. "If women wish to eat these food items, a third party, preferably a male related to them such as their a father or husband, should cut the items into small pieces and serve," the cleric dictated.

According to the cleric, bananas and cucumbers "resemble the male penis" and therefore could arouse women or "make them think of sex." The cleric also added carrots and zucchini to the list of forbidden foods for women.

The news about this latest diktat against women went viral on the web with liberal Muslims feeling enraged and embarrassed. Repression of women in ultra-conservative Islamic societies has been an intense subject of debate throughout the world.

D'you reckon this is what he had in mind?

I say keep the bananas and ban the men.

Edit: On second thought, let's just ban Islamic clerics. It would be a shame to ban men altogether.

How can anyone get angry and embarrassed when they don't know who this person is, and with what authority they speak?

What, even that of the liberal Muslims who are embarrassed by this kind of nuttery?

We can't blame the guy to not want to come out, can't we? If it was me, I wouldn't want people to know that I took such a decision.

How and where the ban is imposed? Is it in Europe?

Do some men feel inadequate holding a banana?

Could this be the start of "a banana envy" craze?

What will chiquita say to all of this?

This is one slippery slope.

I am not a fan of any religion.

But I do not discriminate between religions........i think they are all equal.

Now wouldn't cutting these food items to pieces trigger off castration fear in men?

He is the one thinking of sex all the time, not women in general.
Even I don't think of sex when I see bananas, and it doesn't take much for me to sin. Maybe I'm just blasé...
