Christopher Hitchens passes away

Tributes paid to journalist Christopher Hitchens

He had been suffering from oesophageal cancer.

Tony Blair described him as "a complete one-off, an amazing mixture of writer, journalist, polemicist, and unique character".

The author Salman Rushdie, a friend, paid tribute to him on Twitter after the announcement of his death.

"Goodbye, my beloved friend. A great voice falls silent. A great heart stops," he wrote.

Losses like his always resonate more when they had the impact he had...I'm always going to remember him as a Jewish activist who defended the Palestinian people tirelessly

Re: Christopher Hitchens passes away

A sad loss. I remember him first from his elegant writing in the New Statesman at the beginning of the 80's.

Yesterday evening, I watched this beautiful tribute on Youtube from Steven Fry and many other of his friends.

A big loss. One of very few journalists who are not afraid to research and fight for the convictions.

This guy has a special place in my bookshelf. Personally, he lead me to an interesting point where I could like him and Chomsky at the same time.

sad that he left.

A legend, even if you didn't agree with him.

I'm frustrated that I had never heard of this man until his death. Thankfully You Tube carries some of his appearances and talks; I'll have to start looking at his published works - any suggestions as to a particular title?

Re: Christopher Hitchens passes away

RIP Christopher Hitchens, sadly gone at such a young age.

A fine polemicist, debater and essayist but his full length books were mediocre. nothing he has written will be remembered.

check out his superb 2005 debate with george galloway:

his support of the second gulf war and of bush, blair and their neocon gangs has tarnished most of his previous work

Try this, a collection of his essays.

I didn't agree with him all the time, but he was a masterful writer, and I always looked forward to reading his pieces. He will be missed.

Re: Christopher Hitchens passes away

I forgot to add that Hitchens was also a professional contrarian, see his critique of Mother Theresa

Thanks for this information. The late George Carlin preached a similar vein - also You Tube.

Re: Christopher Hitchens passes away

I feel far more upset by his passing than I rightfully should - perhaps because he was such a strong voice for intellect and reason in an increasingly unreasonable and dim witted world.
