Is 120,000 CHF enough to live in Angola?

Is 120,000 CHF enough to live in Luanda in Angola?

Amazingly, it would appear not!

Makes Zurich/Geneva rents and prices in Globus seem a bargain

Luckily the infrastructure is so poor, you couldn't flush the loo after 10pm even if you wanted to.

Would Angola be really expensive or are the locals just ripping off those naive expats?

In the article, they mention lack of infrastructure and the profiteering of importers and landlords. The importers thing reminds me of another country, can't quite remember which...

Re: Is 120,000 CHF enough to live in Angola?

That's what happens in a overcrowded city...
(Luanda has a population of over 5 million).

I'm not even saying that, it's the guy in the news:

It's a supply and demand issue, he said. "As more construction is being done, there is more accommodation available and prices are coming down. In some cases apartments are 50% cheaper than they were three years ago and that trend will only continue as more housing is built."

They tend to grow, grow, expend, at a price...

A price they are all willing to pay?

Your reward will be imported from Germany by the single preferred importer at the EUR/CHF rate of three years ago.

That way, it's worth twice as much here as over the border. It's like winning twice as much!

Re: Is 120,000 CHF enough to live in Angola?

I was offered an IT contract in Angola about 3-4 years ago so I looked into it and was amazed at the prices. They were offering good money but the standard of living for the money they wanted for apartments etc was awful.

That and the constant bribery needed to do anything and the security situation made it a no-go. Better off here...

Look into it very carefully, surf around and see what comes up, maybe it's ok for you. Personally I wouldn't take it.

Well, remember it's not just about the money. Think of the mountains, lakes deserts etc.

Not surprised... the general infrastructure is poor, and expats - normally there to work for mining and oil companies are handsomely compensated.

back in 1995, I had colleagues working there and bachelors were paying USD 4000 a month in rent... while I was paying the princely sum of USD 900 a month for a 5 bedroom villa with a swimming pool in Tehran - and my local contacts told meI was being ripped off
