Athens set ablaze by protesters

Quote:
Historic cinemas, cafes, shops and banks were set ablaze in central Athens on Sunday as black-masked protesters fought Greek police outside parliament, while inside lawmakers looked set to defy the rage by endorsing a new EU/IMF austerity deal.
Ok, I have to admit when I saw the headlines my heart sank as I thought it was Athens, GA, with protests about a Wal-Mart opening downtown (for realz).

But this is terrible.

Central Athens burns

Re: Athens set ablaze by protesters

I have a lot of sympathy for ordinary Greek people. It was not their bizarre deals which brought the country to its knees, but this unlawful activity cannot be tolerated. I hope sensible people go home now and wait for the results of their Government decisions.

come to think of it, the same could happen in any country... citizens are, for the most part, powerless to resist the overt and covert acts of their elected government until it it is usually much too late...

Just think how the majority of the people here who took out 80% loans in the last couple of years might react to having their wages frozen or cut....

On the positive side, most Swiss males already have an assault rifle at home - no need to loot weapons's stores etc.
They could spare the little shop- and cafe-owners and go right to the top...
