Robin Gibb dies aged 62

Just heard that Robin Gibb has died aged 62. He had been battling Colon Cancer.

His brother Maurice died in 2003.

Made some of my favourite music with the Bee Gees

RIP mate.

Robin Gibb 1949-2012

It's extremely tragic what has happened to the whole family. I really liked their music too. Let's not forget though that there are many more people who experience sometimes much worse fates but who never receive the press coverage, simply because they were not a VIP.

May you rest peacefully Robin

Sad news. I am a closet BeeGees appreciator.

One wonders what kind of lifestyles all these stars have had to cause the cancer and curtail their lives so young.

This is so sad and pointless. Colon/bowel cancer is a silent killer that can be so easily detected and cured if caught in time by a coloscopy (Darmspiegelung) - painless procedure recommended to all over 50...

My husband's gastroenterologist told us that age-based screening in Switzerland (at least Bern) is not the norm, and most people only go when they develop symptoms. Might be different in Zurich.

The prep does affect some people for a few days to a couple of weeks afterward. Having said that, it is well worth the inconvenience. It's just that you may feel crappy for a week or so after. It's not a reason to avoid it.

If he didn't have bowel surgery until the age of 60 and wasn't diagnosed with cancer until a year later, as stated in the BBC report, it may have developed too early to be picked up by screening, at least going by the UK's screening programme:
Quote:
The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme offers screening every two years to all men and women aged 60 to 69. People over 70 can request a screening kit...

Re: Robin Gibb dies aged 62

My understanding is that screening for bowel cancer in Switzerland is up to individuals. I paid CHF600 to have this done in Zurich when I turned 60. My GP recommended this. Essentially it is not possible to detect bowel cancer until symptoms appear - essentially bleeding - by any other method, by which time it can be too late.

Having seen the inside of my lowers bowels on colour monitor, and seen the odd pollip or two removed. I would say the early signs of bowel cancer are readily detected this way...
