Well that remark might have been relevant for the Silver Jubilee, but since Digital Terrestrial and Satellite channels have been around for at least 5 and 25 years respectively, that kind of makes your point irrelevant.
Relevance is up to you to decide. Accuracy is unquestionable though

Re: What is it about us Brits and blanket coverage of meaningless stuff....?

I suppose I'm prejudiced, being a Londoner and the Queen having been a part of my life for a very large part of her's.
I represented my school at the Coronation in Westminster Abbey in 1953 - the only time I've ever represented anything anywhere.
I was also in London during World War 2 when, to a large extent, it was the Royal Family who kept our spirits up by staying in London for most of that horrible time. I was a very little girl, but I remember it well. Who wouldn't remember having houses around them flattened.
I think the younger members of the Royal Family are a pretty shabby bunch, but the Queen herself has always behaved impeccably and well deserves her celebration.
The weather doesn't look too hopeful for the weekend, but I hope it will only be the weather spoiling the celebrations, and not some anti-royalist bombers.

Diamond Jubilee river pageant's rousing musical finale
Quote:
The final vessel to reach Tower Bridge was Symphony, carrying members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal College of Music Chamber Choir.
The singers got drenched by rain as they performed several songs to the Royal Family including Land Of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, and the national anthem.
Soaked, freezing and yelling Rule Britannia. All in a good cause.

Well I loved it, and not ashamed to admit it.
I have a complaint though, I was at school at the time of the silver jubilee and we were told we would all get a commemorative mug. Still waiting.

Having grown sick to death of hearing about a ship that sunk (sank? sinked?) 100 years ago (never really sure why that is making headlines still), we now need to endure days and days of coverage on UK TV channels of the jubilee!

Aside from the fact that I personally feel that monarchy is a trifle outdated, incestuous and pointless institution - why do we need to put up with blanket coverage of.....well, of what exactly? Fawning, sycophantic programmes by the broadcasters including tonight a tribute to the Queen by her own son - why the hell does that even need to be televised? Charles - pop by her house (its the big one with the roundabout outside it) - and tell her yourself and don't block up my TV with it. And then parades, retrospectives, concerts, more parades.....

If we need so much coverage - where is the famed "balance" of the BBC? Where are the critical shows? Can we have a show about the famed intelligence of the Windsors (eg the Queens sister once went to hospital with two burned feet from stepping into a hot bath. Who burns TWO feet getting into a hot bath? What about Andrews dealings with the Libyans?)

Anyway - I feel better now.

(PS don't say "go for a walk" - stuck in with a sick baby )
The Queen has a spy satellite with laser beams on it just for people like you!

As far as l can tell that would be "Punk Britannia " on BBC 4 tonight. Although I'm sure they won't cover "God save the queen" until episode 3 which l'm sure will be safely after the jubilee.
I was wrong - it was played!

I like it too. Just not 24/7. A little goes a long way.

The river pageant was quite a bit too long I thought.
Or was it because I got soaked hanging about on someone's roof by Tower Bridge in the pouring rain?

The best moment of the TV coverage was the guy saying "You've really got to be here to appreciate the atmosphere"

Nice work, TV guy. Shall we all just check out our sets when we can't attend in person??

More like "soak up" the atmosphere...

There was also another comment about not getting another chance to see this again in your lifetime.

Rather unsporting not to let the Deutsche Marine take part in festivities and allow them to send a U-Boot up the Thames. Forgive and forget and all that ....

Didn't quite get this reference before. I have the super power of being able to forget easily. But it eventually clicked.

I flew ZHR-BOS on Swiss right before the 100th anniversary. As we are getting closer to Boston, I noticed on that tracking map thing "Titanic, 1912" marking the location where it sank. And not only that, a few cm to the left there was another listing "such & such, 1967". They had plotted out a dozen or so ship wrecks on the GPS map.

First, that's not always there right? I mean, it's not something I just never noticed? Second, who would think that's a good idea? Third does anyone else think that's creepy?

Or they were there and not surfacing because UK defense cuts with the Nimrod MRA4 program meant that there was no equipment left to monitor sub activity.

What next? "You are now flying over the site of the horrific plane crash into Mt Erebus, in 1979, killing (inject slightly geeful note) all 257 on board! Next up, keep your eye on the port side of the plane for the Star Dust airliner disaster -- that one only wiped out 11 people."

That's exactly what I was thinking! It's creepy. They didn't note plane crashes, only ship wrecks. But I do wonder if this was a one off type thing or do they do this alot?
