Young man warning of the dangers in social networks

To combat this and raise awareness, a number of people have attempted to name and shame those who share too much about themselves online.

One such domain is www.weknowwhatyouredoing.com , which shares public Facebook and Foursquare statuses from across the globe. Posted under categories which range from “Who wants to get fired” to “Who’s taking drugs?”, the portal highlights posts that probably should have never seen the light of day.

Callum Haywood, 18, has seen a huge reaction to his site, 'We know what you're doing'The site’s creator, 18-year-old Callum Haywood, told Yahoo! News that the project was intended to highlight the growing problem.

“I was looking through Facebook’s API [Application Programming Interface] and wondered whether I could get information out of it that people wouldn’t necessarily want publishing,” he said. “That’s when I started to type in queries like ‘new phone number’ and I released then that quite of information then comes up.

That has to be one of the saddest and most pointless websites of all time.

Maybe, but a lot of people either stupidly or unwittingly post far too much publicly accessible information about themselves online. If that site gives these people a wake up call on that, then it may well have a very good point indeed.

Rather than sharing too much information being a problem, it seems to me from a quick look at the website, that too much alcohol being consumed is a bigger problem.

You have got to be kidding - with titles like `who wants to get fired` - who do you think the guy is doing a service to?
Do you think that if I posted `Oops, had a great night last night - got a bit drunk`- that I am going to be perceived as a threat to society?
The guy is looking to make money it out of it - he`s not helping anyone by trawling facebook for comments - and then putting them on a rogues gallery - except if he thinks that companies will buy the info.

Re: Young man warning of the dangers in social networks

I had one person on Facebook who shows every single thing she has, buys, etc.

New car? Pics with plate number, home? Pictures with the address, new tv? Etc. She tells when she goes in Hollidays, where and for how long. It doesn't take much for someone who wants to have a little shopping tour at her place to do it.

Guy should post on the FAT BUM thread as for a 18 year old he has a big fat belly. The nerd should move more rather than collect FB info.

Thanks for your comments, I also found it a bit odd that he "names and shames" in a public place !

If he was naming and shaming in private then I guess it would fail to have any impact.

Anything you supply to the internet is permanent. It doesn't matter if you delete it, it's still there, and accessible via caches, or if legal matters are involved directly from the site itself. Nothing is ever deleted, just rendered invisible for the majority.

Re: Young man warning of the dangers in social networks

Interesting how two people can read the same thing and feel such a different reaction.

I'm a bit bewildered by people saying that this is pointless, a waste of time,/effort etc. The point is obvious, surely? Some people are incredibly indiscreet online and need a wake-up call. Several people were jailed following last year's UK riots because they bragged on Facebook about looting shops and attacking the police. People video themselves committing serious crimes.... they brag about their drug use, their sex lives, naming names, they post their personal ID details....

Yep, up to a point I think 'let them hang themselves' especially if serious crime is involved. Maybe we should be grateful they are thick enough to incriminate themselves. But it all goes to prove that many people feel a weird dissociation between their online selves and the real world.

That guy is so creepy looking...
This probably all started from his lame attempts at getting even with the people who made fun of him in high school.

Re: Young man warning of the dangers in social networks

I guess you have to consider both sides of the coin here:

Heads: you are an individual who uses facebook. Depending on your security settings you may publish information that unintentionally exposes a bit too much info for the audience be it friends, select friends or all Facebook users. It may be seen it may not, it may cause trouble it may not, out of sight out of mind.

Tails: you are an individual that collects all potentially damaging data, collates in one place, and publishes under insinuating sub categories on an assumingly profit motivated website.

Maybe he has good intentions. Maybe he considers himself an entrepreneur

I suspect his site will do more to ruffle the feathers and make him a target than the individuals he is trying to "help".

Man, my boss is like such a complete twat, feel shit, hungover, slept with 4 people last night. Fridge is empty, cat hurled chunks on the sofa, PlayStation soaked in piss, all in all another great night.
