I'm just putting the argument in perspective.

I am not saying it is right or wrong, it is just the way I see it.

I thought that the more offensive comment actually had to do with Pippa Middleton. She should be seen only from the back. What does he expect, she should stand up against a wall? Wear a bag on her head?
Lagerfeld's a crazy old fart anyway.

I must say he doesn't look very nice either, my dog is better looking!

| | | Re: Is Adele Fat? | Quote: | | | | | A lot of these self-appointed gurus on female aesthetics such as Karl Lagerfeld would not recognize beauty as a reflection of a beautiful soul even if it hit them over the head. | | | | | | Quote: | | | | | My dog is better looking than a lot of people. Lagerfeld reminds me of a demented Baroque dude stuck in the wrong century. | | | | | He wears the collars to hide his horrible neck. This is one thing plastic surgery can't do for him. The guy is responsible of what is wrong in the fashion industry with the anorexia and the impossible pressure on women.

| | | Re: Is Adele Fat? | Quote: | | | | | Depends on the society, I guess. In an impovershed society, I could imagine that skinny people would be jealous of those with enough to eat that they can gorge themselves, and of course I know some girls who are very sensitive about being underweight. But in any case, see my previous comment. Slim is preferred over fat for a very good reason. | | | | | Do you think we're discussing impoverished societies here? It's not a leap to assume we're talking about the society in which she lives.
I'm not talking about slim anyhow. I'm talking about skinny/underweight, which a heck of a lot of singers are these days. West Coast made a good point.

| | | Re: Is Adele Fat? | Quote: | | | | | She is round and she carries it well. | | | | | That's a lovely way to put it and I totally agree. But I suspect Lagerfeld to mean more or less the same. He speaks in a very dry way, marrying the German directness with the parisian impertinence. In countless interviews, he was asked about anorexia/thin/young/unrealistic ideals in fashion. I've always heard him be very honest about it: yes, fashion is presented for an ideal, and then the clients get their robes adapted to their not ideal body. Models are not real women but an aesthetic presentation accessoire. It's harsh and hard to hear, but that's the absolute truth all over the world for any marketing of product: the family shown on TV for selling margarine is not real either, not realistic and a prototypical social ideal too. Same with models.
The difference between Lagerfeld and me is that he doesn't care about the consequences of such a marketing, exactly as the margarine producers don't care about the caricature of a family image they are using. I do care about the consequences when there are any. And frankly, I care as much about the conservative restrictive image of family in media as about the body shape ideals for women and men.
Therefore: I have a bigger issue with the blond kid on the Kinder Schokoriegel than with the inadequate wording or a fashion guru.

| | | | | You mean it's okay to call someone a "Twig"? Why isn't that offensive?
Do you think that fatter women aspire to be like the skinny/underweight "celebrities" and when they realise that this look is unattainable, they give up and reach instead for the box of doughnuts?
There is a middle ground, you know - a weight that is good for the joints in your knees, good for your heart and good for your general well being. That's what people should strive to achieve - for themselves.

| | | Re: Is Adele Fat? | Quote: | | | | | You mean it's okay to call someone a "Twig"? Why isn't that offensive? | | | | | Because we live in a society that values thinness - even when it's quite extreme. I acknowledged that some people might find it offensive but I never did nor have any of the women I've known. And it's generally not as offensive as being called "fat" for this very reason. | Quote: | | | | Do you think that fatter women aspire to be like the skinny/underweight "celebrities" and when they realise that this look is unattainable, they give up and reach instead for the box of doughnuts? | | | | | Actually yes, some do. It's very common. Dieting/emotional eating. Worse still some women will attain this but do so by using unhealthy means since to be this underweight requires a drastic reduction in calories. | Quote: | | | | There is a middle ground, you know - a weight that is good for the joints in your knees, good for your heart and good for your general well being.
