Yep, it's all a conspiracy by those who like Switzerland

It's been on the BBC, and in a number of foreign newspapers, as well as having been discussed on the forum. But you knew that...
FYI: The post you quoted was before the horrific incident which took a place 2 days ago.

Seattle

Cue calls for increased gun ownership to boost sales for the firearms industry so that more shootings can be prevented.

Burkesville, Kentucky

Quote:
Kentucky girl, 2, fatally shot in chest by 5-year-old brother...

Officials identified the single-shot rifle as a Cricket, which is produced by Keystone Sporting Arms in Pennsylvania. It sells the weapons in a variety of colors, from hot pink to brown to a swirl of red, white and blue...

Officials said Kristian’s rifle — given as a birthday present last year — is normally kept in a corner of the Sparks' home. Although the safety lock was on, the family says they didn’t realize a shell was still inside the firearm.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

I just read an article about that yesterday. So incredibly sad.

The article I read also said that, in some parts of the U.S., it's not uncommon to give a child a gun for his or her 5th birthday!

WTF.

Anyways, I think this is just another example of why it is obviously not a good idea for so many people to have guns in their homes. Despite the fact that they may have passed a background check or taken a safety course, etc., that certainly doesn't ensure that their gun will never fall into the wrong hands or be used when it shouldn't.

Duncan, Oklahoma: Australian student shot dead for fun

Three Oklahoma teenagers have been charged in the death of an Australian who was gunned down in broad daylight as he jogged on a road in the US state.

College baseball player Christopher Lane, 22, was shot in the back in the town of Duncan on Friday.

Police said one of the accused admitted Lane was killed for "the fun of it"....

'we were bored and didn't have anything to do, so we decided to kill somebody'

Johnson's son also attends Duncan High School, where suspect Luna and Edwards Jr. were students. He said he knew both boys, and described them as "troublemakers" and "bullies" who had "no parental supervision."
The father of one of the killers was interviewed on CNN this morning saying he was sorry someone had been killed but that he also felt that he had lost a son because of this. Little or no trace of sympathy for the victim's family.

Right...just because the Swiss media choses to downplay its domestic incidents and deliberately inflates foreign occurances. There were 4 deadly shootings in Switzerland within the last 2 weeks..but they don´t get no airtime, wonder why.

So are Colombia and South Africa, but I don't see any 'shooting' threads dedicated to those countries.

I wonder why?

To be fair, the "sensible" press here doesn't do that either. If you are a Blick reader then it gets the same sensationalistic treatment as the tabloids elsewhere and they do beef up such stories.

Per capita the U.S has one of the lowest violent crime rates verses the U.K which has one of the highest. But let's believe media hype over statistical fact.

Anyways there was another school incident involving an AK 47 in the state of Georgia. The guy never shot anyone, just wanted to talk to police. Maybe this has something to do with needing mental help. But I think it's the AK, they should be banned and made illegal. If they were banned it would be impossible for criminals to posses such a thing.

Not according to this it isn't. Just be glad you don't live in Honduras...

On the wider subject of "violent" crime - the stats are skewed because the US and UK definitions of it are different so the media wetting its pants over the levels of "violent" crime in the UK and US is probably misplaced.

Quote:
...the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports defines a “violent crime” as one of four specific offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault.

The British Home Office, by contrast, has a substantially different definition of violent crime. The British definition includes all “crimes against the person,” including simple assaults, all robberies, and all “sexual offenses,” as opposed to the FBI, which only counts aggravated assaults and “forcible rapes.”
From here.

Because the locals admit they aren't safe places so there's nothing to disprove?

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

Damn, I shoulda seen that coming.

Interesting what you can do with statistics isn't it.

Well, its true, there are a lot of violent crimes outside the US. Mexico comes to mind immediately. Yet, I didnt see or hear about many UK teens carrying handguns and shooting joggers just for the fun of it.

No doubt the next post will be a statistic saying that you are four times more likely to be shot as a jogger in the UK, but somehow I doubt that.

A good question, DB. What's your answer?

I think that it's something to do with expectations. Your candidates for shooting threads do not go around singing the equivalent of "God Bless America, Land of the Free". From abroad, Americans shooting each other is somehow OK, they have the gun laws that they deserve (a debatable notion, but you see what I mean). However when an innocent foreigner (white, from a developed country...) is shot dead by three Americans "because they were bored" then that is news.

PS Tom1234 just said something similar while I was away from the keyboard...
