Paki. Short for Pakistani.
Aussie. Short for Australian.
Brit. Short for British.
Saffer. Short for South African.
Zim. Short for Zimbabwean.
Jap. Short for Japanese.

Are you going to get excited about all those abbreviations, or just the first one, selectively?
With all due respect 22, Paki is a very different word to Aussie or Brit. For a start it was historically (and probably still is) used to describe anyone of Southern Asian appearance, so not exactly an accurate abbrev of Pakistani.

Secondly it has been used as a way to degrade and humiliate people, often being a prelude to violence e.g. 'Paki bashing' which was considered a sport by racist skinheads in the 70s and 80s, and hate graffiti stating 'Pakis Out' was often daubed on Asian owned homes and businesses.

and here, its modern day equivalent

So yeah, all in all there is a lot of historical context which may not be apparent to those who did not grow up in the UK during that period.

Anyway its ultimately up to the target group to say whether or not they find it offensive.

Re: Indian rape case.

Whereas I agree that the term has definitely become innacceptable and I cannot think of any context where it would be OK, not even in jest, I do agree with the previous posters saying that originally this was not so, but that tabooesque reactions to its use have led to only those with the intent to offend using it, and the tabooisation thus becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Well summarized. That's what I was trying to say in about ten times as many words.

Re: Indian rape case.

India is NOT a place where highest number of rapes happen, so why the guy who started this post didn't started post on other nations ? Because those nations offer BISCUITS to his nation?

Sorry by mistake I talked about Sbrinz ... Sam Ali who started this post is from pakistan... ( Oh sorry, correct name is Islamic Republic of Pakistan).

Even in other posts, this guy quoted India negatively. So I talked about him.

.................................................. .................................................. ..

Do you want me to offer him a lollypop ? I don't hate any pakistani, but such kind of attitude is disgusting.

India suffered massive attack after attacks from fanatic militants, in which so many innocent people died... Latest person who attacked at Mumbai named Ajmal Kasab everyone knows how and where he was trained.

Ok leave it ...

At least, after horrifying acts of Peshawar school at own soil, its better to correct national fanatic people or keep quiet rather than doing such a CHEAP business of quoting negatively about India

.................................................. ..................................................

By the way look at your own surrounding first, you marry several women it is nothing but a official rape.

Thanks Dougal's Breakfast.

Yes premi I did start the post, which you mentioned, but what you failed to also mention was that there was nothing posted about blaming India and all indians in that, but to express sorrow on a young woman passing away in such a brutal manner.

And yes i am from Pakistan, but a lot of my friends here are from India and they share the same sentiments about what happened there. Plus, any fanatical nut job from Pakistan gets the same treatment from me, as from any other country, and I am open about any wrong doings there as well.

So before you point that out, get your facts straight.

If something negative happens and then to point that out is not a hate agenda but merely mentioning it.

And just to clear one thing up. I have nothing against India. Plus a lot of my friends are from India.

And to mention whatever happens in India and how Pakistan is to blame for it, as you just did, there can be a counter post about all the attacks going on in Pakistan, that people would blame on Indian based plans. Just saying. The typical back and forth game.

But as far as I am concerned, I would never blame an average Indian on it and welcome better relations btw both people.

Well someone needs to, since you seem not even to acknowledge it.

And posting links of fanatic nut jobs killing kids does not justifiy rape in India ok

Hey I think you can't understand Mr. Ali's real purpose. I really appreciate him for being an well wisher of India. He has started this thread to focus on the fact how Indians can stand up against a shameful crime, millions of Indians raise their voice against rape, one of the leading political party didn't get any sit in Delhi because people think government was unable to protect women.

There are some countries where terrorist can take shelter, obviously those countries can't think about these kind of protest neither against terrorism nor against crime like rape.

Other countries' misery and idiosyncrasies are more outrageous and/or ...entertaining.
Indians with PhDs working for Microsoft etc. will never make news because in general positive things can't make news.

Get over it.
