Are you going to get excited about all those abbreviations, or just the first one, selectively?
Paki is not taken as a short for Pakistani. In fact it is considered rude and racist. Especially when it is paired with other derogatory words. As strange as this may sound but calling someone a Pakistani Bastard is not half as bad as calling someone a paki bastard. People from Pakistan like to be called Pakistani. Reason is because the word Paki has been used in a racial sense in the past. It is taken negatively by most if not all pakistanis and until and unless you do intend to insult a Pakistani avoid using it.

Your ignorance is overshadowed by your arrogance

They are not just "abbreviations"
Some are considered derogatory.

Indeed, I'd be quite insulted if someone referred to me as a 'Brit'!

I don't know how popular the name is for babies, but looking at cartoons the name appears to be very popular for cartoon characters. No idea why.

It's really interesting to read the two articles in parallel:

Classic troll behaviour. When called out, doesn't address the issue. Pretends to be battling abusive behaviour, but is abusive themselves - then pretending never to be abusive.

Many attractive positions just get flooded by applicants for internships. They don't even have time to read through all the applications, let alone give them fair consideration.

Applicants can thus count themselves lucky if they even get an official notification they've been turned down. Any reason offered is clearly bunk, but obviously this professor let the standard slip a bit in inventing credible excuses.

I don't actually offer and have never offered any internships, but have co-authored a number of articles, mostly actually some time ago. But I regularly get emails from people saying they are fascinated by my research and seeking an internship. For some strange reason, about 90% of them are Indian. The funny thing is that my articles were not actually scientific papers but editorial contributions that got published in scientific journals and I'm not even a researcher and my writing was not about research. Obviously these people are going through the author lists without actually consulting the articles. Neverthless, the emails received invariably contain a lot of damp and desperate drivel about how much my research has inspired them and how they want to be part of it. My general take is that if people don't take the time to read my article, I don't need to take the time to write a rejection letter. But I can understand if others decide to get a little snarky in firing off responses.

Usually such a space indicates that a word has been removed by the forum profanity filter (swear nanny). There's not many words in there, and none of them are complimentary.

Of course, you could have deliberately left a space to be enigmatic, but then you'd be leaving yourself open to misinterpretation.

Thanks, Prof. Davidinzurich, I'll try really hard to learn the difference.

The word "Paki" has been embraced by Pakistanis as PROOF that those nasty BRITISH (because it's pretty much only in Britain that "Paki" is considered offensive) people hate all PAKISTANIS -- they call them "Pakis" and not "Pakistanis", so they MUST hate them!

Did you ever stop to think about cause and effect here? Do you think a few English people started to use the term "Paki", and Pakistanis instantly identified this as derogatory and racist and took offence? Or did a few racist British people use "Paki" simply as a convenient abbreviation, appending the suffix "bastard" to get their racist message across, so that Pakistanis came to associate the inoffensive abbreviation with the racist message? My money is on the latter. Now, what if those racist Brits had simply called the immigrants "Pakistani bastards"? It'd be a bit hard to take offence at the term "Pakistani", wouldn't it? What if there hadn't been a convenient abbreviation -- what if the immigrants had been from Rwanda? Would "Rwandan" become an offensive word?

No. Of course it wouldn't.

Australians routinely call the English "Pommie bastards", sometimes with malice. Do the English thrown up their hands with affected horror every time they hear the term "Pom"?

No. They smile and throw some insult back.

So what would happen if the National Front types stopped using "Paki" and turned to some other variation instead -- like "Stan"? Would there be a collective wringing of hands until that epithet was also "banned"?

The word is not the problem. The attitude is.

Perhaps Pakistanis should grow thicker skins. Racism is not acceptable under any circumstances, but trying to ban natural variants of the word for your nationality is a strange way to go about stamping it out.

That's why the BNP are against it.
