I think India needs atleast 15 more years to join G8.

Re: India ready for G8 membership ?

Creative path,

Before you start running down India, let me remind you that India is a huge country with world's second largest population so while it is easy to pick a metric to say why India doesn't qualfy for G8. its equally easy to pick a metric that says India should have joined yesterday. Here's a sampler : how about having Asia's highest number of billionaires (even ahead of Japan) ? Or how about having the world's highest number of newspapers in circulation with highest number of languages ? Or how about world's largest democracy known to hold free and fair elections. This is one where not even one of your current G8 member -Russia qualifies. Going by this metric maybe India should substitute Russia and let G8 be G8.

Re: India ready for G8 membership ?

I think India is a right contender for G8 membership. India produces over 1 million engineers and 100,000 doctors annually. Democracy is established and secularism is follwed. Backbone of UNO peace keeping forces. An mature and responsible Nuclear power. I think these are enough to be a G8 membership. It will be lose to G8 group, if india is not part of it.

Have you been to India, Creative Path? I shall assume not, based on your thread and references.

You need to look at this debate from a macroeconomic point of view.

So what do you need to be part of the G8? Industrialised nation, democracy...with a significant contribution to the worlds economy. Guess who's got all of this?
Ever wondered why the rest of the world wants to come to India and set up shop? I know, it's hard to tell but India is an emerging superpower.

And it's not just India that is ready to be included. South Africa, China, Brasil...
The G8 was created to discuss global economic and financial concerns. I think developing nations like this will be able to contribute a great deal since it's a situation they combat and overcome day by day.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg...

Cheers,
Maria
