Re: Hot off the printer ....... a working gun.

Sometimes I wonder what would happen to the world if all those brilliant minds apply themselves to solve problems like the lack of water in some countries, or famine, or pollution... instead of coming up with easier ways to kill each other.

What a waste.

Re: Hot off the printer ....... a working gun.

Interesting development but plastic, just not visceral enough to interest me. It's got to be steel or I don't come out to play. I'm not sure about the pressures involved either. Looks like they have engineered it for .22 LR which is probably the limit. I don't know enough about polymers to say more.

Re: Hot off the printer ....... a working gun.

I thought I have heard that while one can be printed and made, that it cannot stand up to the pressures, and if it fires, it can only fire once. But I haven't (yet) read this article...

edit: As a Texas-Ex myself (graduate from U. Texas at Austin) I am not too proud that this "kid" is currently in their law school...

if this technology were really viable, I would hate to see what security measures need to be made to check for them - I guess there is a small piece of metal in the gun - is that enough to be picked up in a metal detector screening machine? The thought of airline travel has become even less attractive!

Re: Hot off the printer ....... a working gun.

I suspect the largest clientele this will appeal to is the unassuming, unconfrontational, paranoid person who does not want a traditional firearm, nor the checks, hassle etc to getting one, or dealing with the pressure that involves, nor wanting to declare you had a gun, but as a new pepper spray for vulnerable women and men in a changing world or arms.

I like it.

Any amount of metal can be picked up by a metal detector.

And yes, there is still metal components within the gun.

Phew...but I wonder how much more intrusive checks at airports will get. For example, I assume they let you through when you have just a low level of metal detected like from a belt or an under-wire bra (currently they don't make you take those off to go through the line ). I wonder if these guns would also require more thorough checks?

Re: Hot off the printer ....... a working gun.

For the genius who printed his own gun. Good work. *slow handclap*.

Does he know how expensive ink cartridges are?

Of course, just for once, it would be nice to read about something truly pioneering and innovative that doesn't involve guns and bombs.

Like the good job those Swiss folks are doing on the solar powered plane.

Oh I am always made to take my belt off.

I tend to remove all metal anyway, particularly if I a smuggling arms and drugs. Do not want any hassle for minor hiccups.

I think we will slowly move towards anything not on our persons is scanned (pretty much like now) and everyone walking through a scanner/full body scanner, that picks up anything anyone his concealing under clothes. I think these exist in some airports though I have not been in one yet.

Re: Hot off the printer ....... a working gun.

I don't understand the uproar about all of this. Yes, 3D printing technology brings down the cost and complexity of creating an undetectable plastic gun, but if this was really a viable terrorist weapon, conventional molding technology already exists that would allow them to make a plastic gun.

In any case, the ammunition is presumably still metal, so existing security checks should ensure that this is caught.

Re: Hot off the printer ....... a working gun.

It's not about making undetectable guns it's about making sharable guns.

In the same way the internet changed the relationship of the people and their government with regards to the control of information, so these chaps would like to see a change in the relationship with regards to the control of firearms manufacture.

Remember the minaret debate? Well, this is the American libertarian equivalent.

Tasteless it probably is, but how do you hope than noone comes to harm when we are talking about firearms?
